3 Coastal Hidden Gems - Off The Beaten Track

Scenic Coastal Walks

Take a stroll along the scenic coastal path from Kippford to Rockcliffe! Admire the beautiful sculptures hidden in the rocks, the flawless views, or embrace the crunch of the shells beneath your feet. The scenic walk will take you through the woodlands and on to the sandy beach at Rockcliffe, where you can take a dip in the Solway sea.

This is a personal favourite of mine and is a slightly longer walk. Give yourself around 3 hours (or 6 hours if you're feeling adventurous and do the return walk). Start from the Kippford village, head along the scenic coast path towards Rockcliffe. From there, you want to head up towards Castle Point where you can stop and admire the stunning views over the Solway Coast. On a clear day, you can see over to the Lake District and catch some incredible mountainous views! Continue along the coastal cliffs, where you can stop off at several hidden bays and beaches for a picnic or dip in the sea. The trail is well sign posted and briefly meets a road around halfway. Follow the road round, back towards the coastline and up on to the trail path again. You will eventually come out at Sandyhills Beach where you can indulge in a well deserved ice cream or swim in the dip (if you're lucky to catch a sunny day). From here you can either take the same route back, or simply jump on a bus from the roadside which will take you a short 10 minute trip back to the entrance of the caravan park.

Looking for a peaceful walk with spectacular coastal views and a hidden white sand beach? This is one that is not to be missed! Please be aware, this walk can be very muddy, marshy and is definitely 'off the beaten track'. Wear good boots, and take plenty of food and water. It is approx. 9 miles long if you complete the loop, so give yourself at least 4 hours. The walk is not sign posted so before you set off, I would advise downloading the free offline App 'Maps me' which shows a more detailed route than other phone map apps. Start from 'Palnackie' (a 12 minute drive from Coastal Kippford Caravan Park). Park in the town and start the walk from Palnackie Primary School. Walk (or cycle if have a bike) past the school and continue walking along the road. Eventually you will come to a gate which will take you off the road and onto a trail path. Continue straight along this path until you come out of the forest area, where you will witness stunning views of the bay looking over to Kippford village. Continue along the path (there may be a few muddy and marshy areas depending on the time of year, but this makes the adventure even more exciting) and up through the forest area. You will eventually come out at the first hidden beach but you can walk even further to the second white sand beach (photo above). The path starts to disappear at this part of the walk so you have to be a bit adventurous and find your own way, or use 'Maps me' if you're really struggling). Once you have reached the second beach, you can either take the same way back, or continue round the island and make it a loop. The loop doesn't have much of a noticeable path so please be careful and use 'Maps me' or another trail app if you can. The loop track will take you back out onto the path just beyond the gate where you can get back onto the road and walk (or cycle) back up to Palnackie village.
