This wonderfully vibrant, colorful image isn't just Instagram bait; it aims to boost local pride by drawing attention to the city’s more celebrated characteristics, right here in the heart of the Market Square District. Its message is clear: Houston, we don’t have a problem.

A dramatic 64-foot semicircular fountain, the Gerald D. Hines Waterwall recycles a ferocious 11,000 gallons of water per minute in what has become liquid Instagram gold. Once you’ve taken your mandatory snap, grab some lunch to-go from the neighboring Galleria before returning to the oak glades in the Waterwall’s three-acre park for picture-perfect picnicking.

Just like everything else in Texas, Houston is by no means small. So rather than trying to see everything on foot, a bike tour is a much more efficient (and enjoyable) option. With the opportunity to get off the main roads, locally-led cycling adventures zoom through areas like Buffalo Bayou and historic Downtown, stopping at locations that those driving would often overlook.

The Rice University Campus is an oasis in downtown Houston and a favorite outdoor space for many Houstonians. Walking and running trails, thousands of mature trees, and lovely old buildings are spread over this 300-acre campus. Also on the grounds are a large number of impressive contemporary artworks that lend to the tranquil atmosphere. Many of these installations are equally, or even more, impressive in the evening when they are lit.

City/town information

The historic beach town, Galveston, is less than an hour’s drive from Houston. It's considered by many to be an extension of the city itself. Why go? There’s plenty to do here, too. From 32 miles of beaches (chilled-out Jamaica Beach is the locals' favorite) to an evocative historic district full of Victorian architecture and old seafaring inns. Check out the chateau-like Bishop’s Palace before pedaling a beach cruiser bike along the seawall at sunset. Had enough of volleyball and sun-bathing? Spend some time fishing and exploring the historic ships at Seawolf Park, including the U.S.S. Cavalla and U.S.S. Stewart.

Shopping

When you hear that this complex is spread across an astounding 3 million square feet, it should come as no surprise to learn that The Galleria is officially the largest and most luxurious shopping destination in the Lone Star State. Housing 400 air-conditioned stores (many of which are exclusive) and no shortage of dining and entertainment options, it’s the perfect place to hang out and refresh the wardrobe on a toasty afternoon. After grabbing a snack at The Cheesecake Factory, why not do a few laps on the center’s indoor ice rink? Open year-round, there’s never a bad time to lace on the skates.

For vintage clothing, retro décor, and old collectibles, 19th Street in The Heights is the place to go. This funky area has all kinds of quirky shops selling everything from evening gowns to casual clothing, as well as jewelry, footwear, household gadgets, and all kinds of unique items. This is also a good place to shop for gifts. The merchandise is not all vintage; some places sell new pieces or a mix of new and old. Even if you are not looking to buy anything, the whole area is worth seeing and offers a one-of-a-kind shopping experience.

The home of the Houston Astros can keep as many as 40,000 fans cool through all nine innings thanks to its 242-foot-high retractable roof and surprisingly effective air conditioning. Why go? If the promise of relief from the Texas heat isn't enough to entice you, Minute Maid Park's food will do the trick. Chow down on exclusive dishes like the tortilla-wrapped hot dog topped with hot Cheetos, queso, sour cream and pico from Torchy's Tacos (one of Austin's original fast food restaurants). Besides, even if you aren't a baseball fan, the atmosphere alone is worth the ticket price. You'll be rooting for the home team before you know it.

The extremely versatile NRG stadium has a diverse calendar unmatched by many others: at various times throughout the calendar, it will play host to monster trucks, rodeos, conferences, sell-out pop concerts, and family-friendly musicals. Its main selling point, however, is sport — NRG is home to the Houston Texans NFL team.
