Sightseeing

Malta has been a seafaring nation since time immemorial, having been at the forefront of shipbuilding, ship repair and trading for millennia. The Malta Maritime Museum brings together some of this rich history in the former Royal Naval Bakery, a unique building in itself and one of the most distinct to the Birgu skyline. Built in the 1840s as the main bakery for the British Mediterranean fleet it today houses a collection of over 20,000 artefacts. The aim of the museum is to illustrate Malta's maritime history, from prehistory to the present, within both a Mediterranean and global context. Address: Birgu Waterfront, Birgu Telephone: (00356) 2166 0052 Distance: 700m More suggestions on sight seeing attractions in the Three Cities are provided in our guest manual, a copy of which will be provided upon confirmation of booking to help you plan your holiday.

Valletta is a UNESCO world heritage site and a short ferry ride away from home, which is the easiest way to access the capital. While we do recommend that you visit the many museums, palaces and grand churches of Valletta during your visit, the city itself is an open air museum, with something to see at every corner. Valletta is just 0.61 square kilometres making it the smallest capital city in Europe. Provided it it is not too hot, it is very easy to walk through the entire city in a day. The walled city was built on the 'Sceberras' peninsula in 1568 by the Order of St. John and is a masterpiece in military engineering. The Knights called Malta their home until the arrival of Napoleon in 1798, prior to which period, the city developed from its original mannerist military style to the baroque splendour visible today. Distance: 8km (or 5 minutes by ferry) More suggestions on site seeing attractions, recommended restaurants, bars and cafes in Valletta can be found in our guest book, a copy of which will be provided upon confirmation of booking to help you plan your holiday.

Gozo is Malta's sister island and more rural in character. Being significantly less developed than Malta, it is known for its scenic hills and laid-back vibes. Gozo is home to beautiful vernacular architecture and natural beauty, and we personally love Gozo for its chilled atmosphere and back-to-basics lifestyle. Gozo is accessible by ferry to its one main commercial harbour called Mgarr Harbour. There is a passenger car ferry leaving from the Cirkewwa ferry terminal at the northern most point of Malta, some 31km away, and a passenger foot ferry leaving from Valletta, which takes 45 minutes to arrive. The easiest way to get around Gozo is by car, and if you intend to explore the island, we would recommend that you consider renting a car to ensure you get the most out of your trip. More detailed suggestions on local attractions and restaurant recommendations can be found in our guest book, a copy of which will be provided upon confirmation of booking to help you plan your holiday.

Comino is the smallest inhabited island from the Maltese Islands (just 3.5 square km) with only two resident farmers. The island is largely untouched with only a few existing buildings, including a chapel, castle, cemetery, battery, derelict quarantine hospital, police station and small hotel. The rugged coastline is delineated by sheer limestone cliffs, sheltered bays and dotted with deep caves, all of which made it popular with pirates and marauders in the Middle Ages. Today Comino is a major tourist attraction famed for its natural beauty. While we do suggest you visit, the influx of tourists in the summer months may dampen the experience as the area can get very congested, particularly in the bay known as Blue Lagoon, but our tips will make the experience enjoyable even during peak season. More detailed suggestions on accessibility, attractions, treks and swimming options in Comino can be found in our guest book, a copy of which will be provided upon confirmation of booking to help you plan your holiday.

Ghajn Tuffieha is one of our favourite sandy beaches, having a perfect balance between raw nature and man made facilities. The beach is a long flight of stairs down from the carpark above, which is a deterrent to some who opt for the more accessible Golden Bay nearby. The sea is clean and the beach is nestled in the countryside. A lovely beach bar called Singita also serves decent food (albeit slightly overpriced), making it an ideal place to enjoy cocktails, lunch or sunset dinner. Naturally all this makes Ghajn Tuffiha a popular beach with locals and tourists alike so try get there early during peak season. More Distance: 21km More detailed suggestions on our preferred rocking and sandy beaches around Malta can be found in our guest book, a copy of which will be provided upon confirmation of booking to help you plan your holiday.
