City/town information

Richmond is a vibrant market town boasting an impressive castle, a vast cobbled market place and an elegant Georgian district. It was formed by the Normans in 1071 and the town grew up around the castle which still dominates the skyline. It is said that the walls of the former imprisonment of King William are 11 feet thick and the exhibition centre within the grounds offers an impressive background into the history of this famous landmark. The cobbled market square is an exciting and vibrant place with plenty of quirky shops, art galleries and a good choice of pubs, restaurants and bars. There is a wonderful georgian theatre hosting shows to suit all tastes in the town. Every Saturday there is a traditional outdoor market, joined by a popular farmers market once a month. The town is also the gateway to the Yorkshire Dales National Park with its wonderful and unspoilt countryside, making it an ideal base for cycling, walking and other outdoor pursuits. The historic towns of York and Harrogate are also within easy reach.
