Kelso, just 7 miles away, is a charming market town in the Scottish Borders and is set beside the beautiful River Tweed where it meets the River Teviot. Famous for the “Junction” Salmon fishing pool, the ruined Kelso Abbey and the historic Floors Castle, generally open to the public. Shops and cafes surround its open square and Ednam House Hotel offers splendid views of the river and Floors. A new large Sainsbury’s is located on the outskirts, off the Morebattle road.

Numerous walks surround the cottage; St Cuthberts Way runs from Melrose to Lindisfarne, The cross country Pennine Way ends nearby in Kirk Yetholm, and Harestanes a local activity centre offers a number of walks up to Penniel Heugh and the Waterloo Monument. In Scotland there is a “Right to Roam”, which allows people to access the countryside as long as they follow a strict code and beware of any livestock on fields.
