About a 40 minute drive from Pickering is Castle Howard set in the Howardian Hills an area of outstanding natural beauty. The house and gardens are stunning and it's perfect for a family day out as it has the most fantastic adventure playground.
The house itself has been used in many film and TV productions, the latest of which was the Netflix series Bridgerton. There's also a good cafe and shop. Check out their website for current events as they often have quite a lot going on: https://www.castlehoward.co.uk/

This is a beautiful seaside village with stone cottages tumbling down a steep hill towards the sea. Traditionally a hub for smuggling in the 18th and 19th centuries you’ll see why with it’s maze of alley ways and a tunnel that leads from the beach underneath the village. Many of the houses had trapdoors that opened up into the tunnel allowing goods to pass unseen. One of our favourite walks is along the disused railway and along the cliff edge with spectacular scenery and industrial ruins: https://www.northyorkmoors.org.uk/visiting/enjoy-outdoors/walking/our-walks/walking-routes/ravenscar-to-robin-hoods-bay/Ravenscar-to-Robin-Hoods-Bay.pdf
