Mount Mitchell’s dramatic summit is the highest point east of the Mississippi at 6,684 feet and was inspiration for one of the nation’s first state parks. A nice drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway. But be prepared for cooler weather in the summer and if visiting in the winter the parkway may be closed due to snow and ice.
