Places to go with a young family

This is a brilliant small ethnographic museum and gardens about 20 minutes away by bus. It has lovely gardens and a great playground over the road too. It has a small aquarium, a great collection of animals, a gallery of musical instruments, and fun temporary exhibitions. It is excellent for children up to around 10 years old I'd say.

This was once a car park that is now a cultural venue, and on level 6 there is a great area where kids can run around, while you have a drink at the bar... ping pong and table football available. In the summer Frank's bar is on the roof with amazing views over London (prepare yourself for the toilets though - they are challenging!)

Local culture - music, pubs, art, cafes etc

In the summer there's a brilliant programme of classical and contemporary music by the Multi-Story Orchestra, who's home is in the multi-storey car park. They do fantastic performances with 'living programme notes' so you really get to know the music before you hear it played. http://multi-story.org.uk/

A really lovely, small gallery in Dulwich Village (20mins walk from the flat, or catch the P4 bus from Sunray Avenue) The Gallery owns one of the finest collections of Old Master paintings in the world especially rich in French, Italian and Spanish Baroque paintings and in British portraits from Tudor times to the 19th century. It also has a summer pavilion in the grounds, and temporary exhibitions.

An excellent place to hang out, with anyone from very young to older people! Always lots going on, has a great vibe, and a good place to explore the South bank of the Thames. Easy to get to from here (train from Denmark Hill to Blackfriars, then 10-minute walk along the river; or no. 68 or 468 bus from 'Blanchedowne' to Waterloo Bridge - 30mins)

Green spaces and parks

A favourite place to cool down if the weather's hot! A beautiful open air swimming pool. Can get really crowded in the summer if it's hot, but there's usually space to swim properly if that's what you want to do. Tip: go down there before 10am on a weekday for a cheaper swim. https://www.fusion-lifestyle.com/centres/brockwell-lido/

This is a beautiful place to go for a walk in the woods. Dulwich Wood, together with the adjacent Sydenham Hill Wood, is the largest extant part of the ancient Great North Wood in the London Borough of Southwark. Easy to get to the entrance to the wood (bottom of Cox's Walk) on buses 176 and 185 from Champion Hill bus stop heading South (15mins by bus). Or it's a 20-25minute walk to the entrance of the wood from the flat, via Dulwich Park.

This is an amazing lido - it's so massive it doesn't feel crowded even if it's full of people. It's not so easy to get to from here if you don't have a bike or car, but worth the trip if you love swimming!

If you want lane swimming, go to Camberwell baths either early morning (before 9.30am) or in the evening (check the holiday timetable for best time) - it's often very quiet; it's a lovely old Victorian pool. Not sparkling clean but the pool itself is nice.
