Go here for lunch or dinner, or just a drink during the day. They have good juices, caipirinhas, and good food. And they have the best moqueca in town! (a local dish from the North East of Brazil, and you can't leave without eating it!)

Drinks & Nightlife

This friendly neighborhood bar specializes in flavored shots of cachaça (sugarcane alcohol), including its trademark clove-infused variety. Decorated with barrels and packed with a vibrant mix of locals and tourists and featuring live music many evenings of the week, it's an atmospheric place to stop in for a quick drink while sightseeing in the Pelourinho.

Down the street, you will find two bars: Alex bar and Kakarecos Brechó e Butikim. Both are crowded with locals. Alex bar is cheap next to the supermarket and there are always people drinking from what seems from morning until closing time. It is a good place to sit and have a cold beer and you will probably have someone playing music. The other bar is a thrift shop in day time and turns into a karaoke bar at night time. Both are fairly cheap and offer a good mix of locals plus usually some travelers or backpackers from the hostels around.

Super well located and one of the older and touristy places in town. This place also has a 24 hour ATM inside and they offer good food as well. Go on a Thursday night to hear my friends playing local famous songs from Salvador!

Living in Pelourinho is like living on a festival. On most nights you will find live music all over the historic center, either on the streets or in the different venues. Most of the time for free, only for the more popular artists they will charge entrance but usually no more than 50 reais. Follow the music and enjoy yourself! If you happen to be in Pelourinho on a Tuesday night, you are lucky. It is the biggest night out of the week. The "Tuesday of the Blessings" starts at 6 pm with a special service afro-baiana on the Church of de Nossa Senhora do Rosário dos Pretos. This is the blue church down the hill from the house. The Catholic mass brings the afro-Brazilian religion inside their walls, and during the service, with people playing music on percussion instruments. After that, the samba reggae bands will be roaming the streets with people following and dancing along. There are several shows on the several venues and after 11 there is a samba happening down the hill to the right (Tuesday nights only).

Just across the bay is the Island of Itaparica and it is a great way to get out of the city and spend the day. Best is to take an Uber to the "FERRYBOAT" (leaving every whole hour from both sides). The ferry is super cheap and takes 1 hour. There you can take a shared van or a motor taxi to the Ponta de Areia Beach. You will have great views of Salvador!

Shopping

Pelourinho is shopping heaven for art, gemstones and beautiful cultural items. Most of the art is not expensive. If you are interested let me know I can always put you in touch with some artist friends or people that make instruments. This is where you shop for capoeira clothes and instruments. Also visit the official Olodum store to support the school directly.
