Exploring a Secret Fort
We're going to explore one of the true hidden wonders of Washington, D.C., a Civil War fort nestled deep in Rock Creek Park. In July, 1864, a Confederate Army attempted a surprise invasion of Washington, D.C., hoping to sow panic and drive Congress and President Lincoln from the Capitol. Confederate forces swept into the city, and fought a desperate battle among the northern defenses of Washington. President Lincoln rode over to the see the fighting, the only time in American history a president has been under enemy fire. Eventually Union forces repelled the attack, and Washington was saved. It’s considered one of the greatest what-ifs in American history: Had the Union lost the battle, most historians believe there would have been a negotiated settlement to the war, and a durable Confederate nation. We’re going to visit Fort DeRussy, one of the forts that drove back the Confederate attack, and learn the full story of how the Civil War came to Washington. Abandoned after the war and overgrown, Fort DeRussy was practically lost to history. Today, it’s virtually unknown: I grew up blocks away and didn't even know it was there. It's an astonishing, beautiful ruin in a peaceful forest grove. Other things to note Please check the weather in advance and dress accordingly. Wear clothing that you don't mind getting a bit dirty and be sure to wear comfy shoes.

If a weather-related emergency arises, I will be in contact with the group to cancel, delay, or reschedule. The tour includes long periods of standing and walking outdoors. The Soul Food Tour with Johnny
Welcome! Are you an enthusiast for African American history and culture? On this tour we will visit over a dozen sites, and the tour ends with a marvelous soul food meal. I will show and explain heritage sites within the historic Shaw community surrounding Howard University in northwest Washington, DC. SHAW COMMUNITY (WASHINGTON, DC) The Shaw community is named in honor of American Civil War Colonel Robert Gould Shaw of the 54th Massachusetts in the US Civil War. Howard University is named after U.S. Civil War General Oliver Otis Howard. The Shaw community emerged after the Civil War with homes, banks, churches, and more. Shaw declined with the 'uprising' of 1968, a national reaction to the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The community lie in ruin until new construction or new investment until 2008. Many tourists have been unaware of these sites until the opening of the National Museum of African American History and Culture in 2016. SOUL FOOD Soul food is the ethnic food for African Americans (Aframericans). The food holds history, tradition and celebrates our freedom. There is also vegan soul food. All the sites are within walking distance. I do not prepare the food. It is prepared by a professional soul food chef. Meet the Mountain Horses of Kentucky
We take guests into the mountains of Kentucky Appalachia by vehicle, guided by local, trained guides, to see and meet the free-roaming horses of Kentucky. Some horses are tame, others are feral. We have given guides extensive safety training and all are familiar with horses. The Guides also provide cultural and historic background of the area during the 30 minute ride up the mountain, and back. While encountering the herds, our guides first make sure there are not too many horses around the vehicle so that no one gets too close. This is usually not the case, as the feral horses do not come close to the vehicle and the tame ones are friendly and don't get too pushy. The total tour is approximately 3 hours, and we offer a money back guarantee if they do not see any horses. But our guides know the mountains and where the horses hang out, so that has never happened. The majority of tour fees go towards our hay and vet fund. We pick up horses when they need extra feed to stay healthy or if they are ill or diseased, or if they wander onto private property. All horses are adopted out once they are healthy again. *If you enjoyed your experience please tip your tour guide if you are able to do so. Thank you!
