HerdyView Lodge is situated in a peaceful location, overlooking rolling hills surrounded by nature on the edge of the Lake District National Park. It is a cosy, modern 3 bedroom chalet with a log burner. Situated close to the market town of Penrith and Lake Ullswater it is in a perfect location for exploring the Lake District and the Eden Valley. Away from the tourist crowds but also within easy access to hotspots and amenities. There are attractions in the local area for all ages and interests.
HerdyView Lodge is a Scandinavian lodge based on a small, quiet residential site and is surrounded by local farming land on the edge of the Lake District National Park. It is within easy access to the Lake District, Eden Valley and the Peninnes. Surrounded by local wildlife and plenty of walks. The lodge is well equipped for all self catering needs and comprises of 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and a large open plan lounge/kitchen. Guests are free to use the log burner and wood is provided for their first fire. The old traditional large windows at the front opens onto a decking area that overlooks fields in front (often occupied by Herdwick sheep). At the back of the lodge is a small garden with seating where a small BBQ and fire pit are also provided. Here also there is a small herb garden to use. There is space for two cars to park at the front of the property. There is always tea and coffee to use as well. The space is very peaceful and relaxing with herdwick sheep, rabbits, deer and cows regularly occupying the view. The lodge is convenient for the M6 north and south also.
The lodge is 5 minutes from the Market Town of Penrith and 5 minutes to Lake Ullswater. There are plenty of nice pubs, tearooms and restaurants nearby to enjoy. There is a pub within walking distance serving local ales and food. The nearest villages include Askham (an pretty village where Askham hall is located who have an award winning tea room and restaurant), Lowther (where you can explore Lowther Castle and Gardens), Tirril (the Queens Head pub here sells award winning pies). There is direct access to numerous walks/cycle routes in this surrounding area, Eden valley, Lowther land and the North Lake District fells. Lake Ullswater has many walks connected by the Ullswater steamer boats, access to different water sports and many other attractions. Pooley bridge is the nearest point on the Lake, where there are pubs, tea rooms, shops and walks. Another fantastic area to explore is Haweswater reservoir, a quieter place and where walks are more remote and equally, if not more, beautiful (if you have a Northern Lakes OS map then the front cover is a picture on a walk at Haweswater). The Market town of Penrith provides you with local amenities, supermarkets, independent shops and cafes. There are many places to take children nearby, visitor centres (such as Rheged and bird of prey centre), an ice cream farm and also many historical sites to see for example Lowther and Brough castle. From the lodge you can easily explore a wide variety of areas, not just the Lake District National Park but also the Pennines, Eden valley and the historic north Cumbria (such as Hadrians wall!)

********************************************************************* * FOR ALL NEW BOOKINGS, FIREWOOD ETC IS INCLUDED! * ********************************************************************* Shap Fell Bothy is an iconic and unique building located on Shap Fell, Cumbria, by the A6 road at 1390 ft above sea level. 10 minutes from Junction 39 of the M6 motorway, and 20 minutes from Kendal. The Bothy has been converted to a camping barn from an old telephone repeater station. It is surrounded by moorland and there are no houses or neighbours for miles around. The nearest village with shops is Shap, about 7 miles away. Situated on the main route from John O' Groats to Land's End, the Bothy is suitable for long distance walkers and cyclists, also mountain bikers, ramblers, bird watchers, astronomers, weekend retreats, music practice, or simply for a unique overnight stay. The back gate opens onto public access land, and there are public footpaths and bridleways across the moorland within 100 yards. The Bothy has a roof-window and is an ideal place for star-gazing, as there is an exceptionally low and wide horizon, and low light pollution. Please note: The landscape is bare high moorland, with no trees nearby, and there are power lines a few hundred yards away. The road can be busy in the mornings, but it quietens off by about 9.00 am, and it is exceptionally quiet at night. The property is completely off-grid ie it is not connected to the electricity grid and has no running water. Lighting and low-usage power (eg for phone/laptop-charging) is supplied by wind and solar. Drinking water and water for washing etc are provided (water can be heated on the cooker or stove). There is a washroom in the building, and toilet facilities consist of a Portaloo chemical toilet cubicle outside. Facilities are basic - best described as indoor camping. The accommodation downstairs consists of a main living room with wood-burning stove, tables and chairs; a kitchenette with caravan-type gas cooker (two rings and a grill); a washroom with small sink; and a hallway with coat hooks and space for boots. Upstairs is a lovely sleeping/lounging area, fully carpeted, with roof windows, ambient lighting and low comfortable seating. Heating is provided by a gas heater. Sleeping arrangements: The Bothy accommodates up to 8 people. In the upstairs there are 4 futon mattresses for the first 4 people to sleep on; additional guests can make use of the upstairs seating cushions or bring their own lilos, carrymats etc. Bedding for up to 4 people is available for hire or you can bring your own. Car parking: Ample car parking is provided 100 yards away in large lay-bys. There is a loading/unloading area off the road in front of the Bothy. Pricing: * The basic price is for up to 4 people. Extra guests charged at £10 per person per night * Cleaning charge is £5 per stay, payable at time of booking * No minimum length of stay (apart from at Xmas and New Year) The following are provided for you and included in your booking charge: * Electric lighting and mains sockets for low-level use eg phone/laptop charging * Gas cooker – 2 rings and a grill (gas supplied) * 10L drinking water per day, and large canisters of water for washing, washing-up etc. (Up to three days supply of water is provided) * Crockery, cutlery and cooking equipment including kettle * Tea towel and hand towel * Toilet paper * Futon mattresses for 4 people (but up to 8 people are welcome) FUEL FOR WOODBURNER & USE OF GAS FIRE, AND BEDDING HIRE Prices were changed on 13 February 2019 to allow for a new booking charge inclusive of fuel. Shap Fell Bothy is located just inside the Lake District National Park, on Birkbeck Common, much of which is a Site of Special Scientific Interest because of species diversity and rare upland habitat. The Common is home to one of the few remaining feral herds of Fell Ponies. The only near neighbours are the birds and the sheep. Shap village is 10 minutes away by car. There are shops, the famous Shap Chippy, heated outdoor swimming pool, pubs and bars. The Bothy is located on the main route from John O' Groats to Land's End, and in summer there are often walkers, runners, cyclists, motorbikers, vintage cars and even a unicycle making this epic journey. The Bothy is mentioned briefly in Wainwright's 'Guide to the Eastern Fells' which is essential reading for walkers. There is a remote weather station about 300 yards south of the Bothy, which can be viewed online. The station gives readings for rainfall, wind speed, visibility, humidity and temperature, and has a webcam which takes a picture every 20 minutes. The station can be viewed on the Cumbria County Council website - just search online for 'Shap A6 weather station'.

Abbey Croft is a lovely four bedroom barn conversion on the very edge of Shap Village. The house has four good sized bedrooms (King with En-suite, 2 Doubles and a Twin room) all bedrooms are on the ground floor. Upstairs is a large open plan family sitting room and games area, benefitting from a large inglenook with multi fuel stove. The well-appointed kitchen diner is fully equipped and has a large range cooker. Outside is an enclosed garden with Hot tub, and outdoor table
Abbey Croft is very much a home from home, a place to kick off your shoes and relax either quietly – or surrounded by family and friends. The house is an ‘upside down’ property with all the bedrooms being on the ground floor, leaving the upstairs for open plan family living. Let me take you on a tour of the house. On entering the front door you are in a small tiled lobby with lots of space to take off those muddy boots and hang up outdoor clothing, through the door is the hall with a double height window and access to the four bedrooms and family bathroom. Each room has fitted wardrobes with both hanging space and shelf space, bed linen and towels are provided. Hairdryers are located in the chest of drawers. Up the stairs you enter the open plan lounge and games area, a place where all the family can get together. A large sofa is sited in front of the multifuel stove to create a cosy zone for curling up after a day in the great outdoors, and the smart TV gives you various viewing options including Freeview, but also allowing you to log into your own content provider if you wish. Wifi is available and we have found that the mobile signal is quite good here (something our own kids can’t do without!). At the other end of the living space is our games area - a full size air hockey table can make things quite competitive, whilst there is also the option of playing Wii games or watching DVD’s from our small family friendly library of films. The storage units at this end of the room also hold a variety of games, books and activities that guests are welcome to use during their stay. From the family room - double doors open into our kitchen diner. Well what can you say, its got the things you would expect (Fridge, freezer, microwave, dishwasher, range cooker) as well as other bits and bobs such as toaster, coffee machine, stick blender and slow cooker – there are cooking pan , pots and accessories – enough to get together a Sunday roast or easy evening meal! The dining table easily seats 8 in comfort and has a fabulous view out over the garden and fells. Going trough to the end of the house a lobby leads into a utility room where there is a washer and tumble dryer available to use as well as vacuum cleaner and basic cleaning items (plus a bag of old towels for drying off any damp dogs! - we would appreciate these being washed by yourselves if you use them - not something I would want our housekeepers putting through with the main wash!), there is also a wc and a 'back door' which leads down a flight of stone steps into the garden. The outside space has off road parking for up to four cars (most important as our lane is very narrow and we do ask guests not to park or unload in the lane itself as it does restrict our neighbours). The garden faces out across fields towards the sunning landscape of the Eastern Lake District. The garden is fully enclosed and gated making it secure for children or dogs. There is a five person hot tub available to use all year round, as well as a barbecue area and picnic bench seating. Just a quick note about our facilities for babies, - we have one travel cot and high chair available for use on request, and a ‘pull out’ toddler bed which there is space for in two of the bedrooms if required. We do not charge extra for these but please let us know in advance if you would be wanting to make use of them. Up to 3 well behaved dogs are also welcome (dependent upon breed size) - we do ask though that they are kept out of bedrooms and are not allowed on the furniture. If your furry friends come back from a walk a little on the damp side – you can bring them straight into the house by the kitchen door which leads directly into the utility and kitchen areas – where the flooring is easy to mop down and they can be made comfortable until they dry off!
Shap is ideally suited for those who enjoy the great outdoors – lying in the beautiful Eden Valley area it is bounded by the Lake District to the West and the Yorkshire Dales National Park to the East and provides a fantastic base for the exploration of the whole region. The village has many useful facilities including a health centre, post office general store with proper old fashioned jars of sweets served in paper bags. The very well stocked Co-Op can provide you with just about all the groceries you could need - including hot sausage rolls and pies, but the area is also well served with good local food producers and farm gate shops (some of which sell their high quality products through the famous Teebay Services farm shop which is a few miles down the road – useful for stocking up en-route!) There are a few eateries in the village to note – the Abbey Coffee Shop serves breakfasts and lunch as well as take away cakes, Shap Chippy is the place if you fancy the great British classic both eat in and take away. There are also several bars/pubs that serve food through the day and into the evening that are within walking distance of the house. Entertainment wise its worth bearing in mind this is a village, and for many guests to the region the great outdoors is all that you need, be it fells, peaks or dales. There are easy access pints to various national cycle network routes as well as being only a stumbling distance to the route of Wainwrights Coast to Coast walk. Shap offers easy driving to many other attractions – we are only quarter of an hour from Penrith with its nearby Centreparks if you fancied a sneaky spa day, or Rheged Arts and Cinema centre, within half an hour you can discover castles, gardens and more ancient history than you could shake a stick at! For families Shap has a special feature during the summer months as it opens its heated open air swimming pool – the highest heated outdoor pool in Britain!

South Cottage, Orton is a 2 bedroom cottage situated 6 miles from The Lake District National Park and nestled within the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Orton itself is very popular and is situated on the famous Coast to Coast route. It has two cafes, a chocolate shop, a monthly farmers market, a village post office and a lovely village pub! The cottage is really cosy, pet-friendly and has super-fast WiFi. It has everything you could possibly need to make your stay welcoming, cosy and fun!
Whether you are an avid walker, an energetic cyclist, a family seeking a touring holiday or a writer relishing the opportunity for a calm, peaceful break, your stay in South Cottage is one you are unlikely to forget. The cottage has been beautifully presented throughout and has been designed to cater for all your needs - even down to the courtesy picnic hamper for those summer walks! Right in the heart of the village, South Cottage has Orton’s hidden treasures within a few steps of the front door. From the popular village pub with regular quizzes and events, the famous Kennedy’s Chocolate Factory (we dare you not to venture in!), the village post office and stores with well-stocked shelves and, for real foodies, the monthly Farmers Market, there really is something for everyone. On market morning, open the windows of the cottage and a waft of hot dogs, chestnuts and seasonal offerings fill the air. Orton is a favourite location for walkers, and forms part of Wainwright’s Coast to Coast walk. Wainwright himself described Orton as ‘one of the loveliest of Westmorland’s villages, a pretty, rural settlement built around a central green with two streams crossed by many footbridges and having numerous venerable buildings and a fine church on a hill overlooking tranquil countryside.’ With stunning local walks including the majestic Howgill Fells and Orton Scar, what will delight the walker, cyclist and driver alike is the wide range of scenery that surrounds the village. From picture-postcard charm, barren and dramatic expanses of limestone terrain to the gentle rolling hills and sheep grazing innocently by the roadside, Orton is truly blessed with a variety of landscapes. Despite all of this, Orton revels in its relatively undiscovered existence and keeps its beauty a secret – away from the hustle and bustle of the central lakes crowds. In the cottage, there is ample hanging and floor space for muddy boots (and paws), coats and rucksacks in the external porch. There is a stylish and separate kitchen which guests comment is very well equipped and features views across the village to the pub! The living room has wooden effect flooring throughout, a sofa, two modern arm chairs, a utility cupboard housing a fridge/freezer, a gorgeous table with seating for four, and the all important open fire. There is also a lovely inviting hallway with feature shelving, housing a wide range of literature. We've provided lots of books on the local area, guided walks and maps for you to use during your stay, plus plenty of board games and DVD's (from family ones to thrillers) for those rainy days or cosy evenings. The cottage has an attractive and quirky bathroom with lovely deep bath, electric shower over and additional hand held mixer tap over, plus plenty of storage for toiletries. The master bedroom is small but cosy and stylish! Inheriting a slightly awkward angle makes furnishing the bedrooms difficult, but we think the mixture of solid oak chest of drawers, matching bedside table and double bed with drawer storage underneath, plus a deep built in wardrobe with rail hanging make up for the lack of space! The second bedroom is bright and airy with plenty of storage - a built in cupboard with hanging space, under drawers in the single bed, a wicker rack of drawers and bedside table. A stone outbuilding provides space for you to stow away your bikes or other equipment as you require. The cottage also comes with a lovely rear patch of garden and a table with a bench - ideal for soaking up the evening sunlight and having a glass of wine in the open air. There is also a front garden which is less private but provides a view of the village – ideal for being nosey and watching life go by! There is allocated parking for one car, but there is also plenty of on-street parking just outside in the village. Please note that access to the double bed in the master is only from one side, so most suitable for the nimble. Sadly, dogs aren't allowed off the lead on the premises as the garden is not fully enclosed and is situated in a communal area. The front garden is lovely and only for the house, but it isn't fenced, so is unsuitable for dogs off a lead. Orton is nestled within the Yorkshire Dales National Park and yet is situated just six miles away from the Lake District border. The area is famous for lakes and mountains and stunning scenery, and Orton is certainly no exception. Even Scotland's only a half an hour away! There is so much to do in the area, that we're only scratching the surface, but the cottage has a large pack of leaflets for numerous things to do - from walking, horse-riding, golf, cycling, watersports, art galleries, boat cruises, historical houses, family days out. You won't have enough time to do it all! Orton village has a Post Office with a newsagents - where you can buy food, logs for the fire, newspapers, sweets etc. Kennedy's Chocolate factory is a definite must-see and only a few steps from the cottage door. As well as a large cafe, there are lots of lovely gift-ideas, sculptured chocolates and novelty items. The Farmers market is on the 2nd Saturday of every month and has a whole host of interesting foods, cheeses and wine. The smell of hot dogs and bacon baps wafts across to the cottage as the market is situated a few yards away! The George Hotel is a lovely, welcoming village pub - a popular stop over for people doing Wainwright's coast to coast walk. There are a large range of ales, food, regular activities and pub quizzes etc.
WALKING - Orton Scar and Great Asby Scar can be reached from the village, and the countryside surrounding the village has numerous footpaths and pretty lanes to discover - and up on Orton Scar you have panoramic views across to the Lake District, the Howgills and the Pennines! Right across the road from the cottage leads you straight onto footpaths which lead out to the fells. LAKE DISTRICT - Our favourite place to visit in the Lake District is Ullswater (for a memorable boat ride on the Steamers) and is around a twenty minute drive from the cottage across probably the most stunning landscape in England. Our tip is to park in Pooley Bridge and walk to Patterdale along the foreshore - stopping in Howtown for scones along the way (not that we're obsessed with scones of course). It is a full day's walking - or you can hop on and off the steamer which goes from Pooley Bridge to Glenridding, stopping at Howtown on the way. Haweswater is the nearest lake to the cottage, being a ten or fifteen minute drive away and is well worth a visit - very peaceful and tranquil and stunning scenery and of course lots of walking. You can walk up to the famous High Street from here - if you're brave enough to take the ridge walk. The Howgills are a popular days walking, with approximately 40 summits - several over 2,000 feet and were favoured by Wainwright. You shouldn't miss the opportunity to visit the village of Sedburgh while you're there. A drive from Orton to Sedburgh provides you with stunning mountain views and Dales charm, and a further excursion to Dentdale and the pretty (and popular) village of Dent is well worth it. While in Sedburgh, do visit the Howgills bakery (after you've done your walk of course!) and sample one of their scones - they really are the best we've ever tasted! RAILWAY TRIP - A trip on the Settle to Carlisle train line gives you one of the most stunning railway trips in Britain. A must do for all the family - try to stop off on the way to visit the villages it stops at for a perfect day out. GOLF - Riverside Golf Club in Ravenstondale (8 miles) is set in absolutely stunning countryside and new visitors are welcome. FISHING - available at the River Lune (2 miles) and the Bessy Beck Trout Fishery at Newbiggin-on-Lune. CYCLING - this is particularly popular in the area - you can plan your own routes using an OS map and meander around the Eden Valley and the Lake District, and venture towards the Dales. The Howgills have mountain bike tracks and Stonetrail Holidays in Ravenstonedale offer mountain bike hire, guided trips and refreshments. HORSE RIDING - Stonetrail Holidays in Ravenstonedale also provide guided horse trekking in the Howgills. Larkrigg Riding School in Kendal offers tuition and hacking in the surrounding countryside. TENNIS - there is a tennis court in Tebay (2 miles), and another in Ravenstonedale. BOWLING - a bowling green in Shap (7 miles) and also in Appleby (10 miles) SWIMMING - Shap has an open air, heated swimming pool. Kendal (12 miles) and Penrith (18 miles) both have leisure centres and Appleby has an indoor pool.
