We promise to do our best to provide an authentic ‘Irish’ welcome during your stay in our home, an old farmhouse on an organic smallholding here in Tipperary. There's nothing quite like our organic breakfast to set you up for a day of touring. We are always here, so we can give you the ‘local’ insight to our beautiful neighbourhood. A peaceful night’s sleep is guaranteed, and if you opt to join us for dinner, it will be prepared with great homecooked organic food mostly grown here.
So many of our guests have arrived as strangers and left as friends.... we hope you will feel the same after your visit to our home. We look forward to welcoming you to our oasis in the Irish countryside. Peace and quiet is guaranteed, away from hustle and bustle. This is the place to come to sit back, relax and watch the grass grow, or admire the beautiful night skies with no light pollution to spoil the view. Our home is an old farmhouse which we have extended and renovated over our time here…. indeed, there is still lots of work to be done, particularly outside. We are based in the very North of County Tipperary in rural Ireland. Each room has a dual aspect looking out over green fields with grazing cattle or sheep. A warm welcome and a peaceful night’s sleep is guaranteed. Your breakfast while you stay at Oldfarm will always consist of organic home produce - our own granola, fresh eggs from our hens, sausages and bacon - all of course, subject to availability. Homemade organic bread, scones, jams and chutneys are also included. Breakfast is served between 8 - 10 am, and is always prepared fresh and to order. If you choose to stay with us you are within easy reach of so many of the wonderful attractions our country has to offer. There are the popular destinations - Birr Castle, Rock of Cashel, Kilkenny City, Galway City, Cliffs of Moher, Limerick City - all within an hour or two of our home. If you want to take a break from driving there are lots of hidden gems right here in the Midlands that are so worth checking out - Fancroft Mill and Gardens, Bellefield House, Lough Boora Parklands, Irish Workhouse Centre and Portumna Castle and Forest. Lough Derg, Ireland’s biggest lake is just minutes from us, and the pretty villages along its shoreline are worth exploring. Definitely enough to amuse and entertain for a couple of days…. have a look through our ‘guidebook’. We are also blessed to have great golf clubs and horse-riding facilities in our area. Our neighbour, Bobby, is a gillie. Should your interests involve fishing or shooting, Bobby is your man. If hill walking is what you like to do, we are just 20 minutes drive from the Slieve Bloom Mountains which offer walks of many different grades. We also have some very talented crafting neighbours who offer classes in crochet, lampshade making, and furniture restoration. We are as self-sufficient, and sustainable, as possible. We grow all of our own fruit and vegetables organically. We can produce dinner from ingredients we have grown here on our smallholding. Sometimes though we do have to subsidise it with food from other sources - but again we will shop from local organic producers. As we are based in quite a rural area we offer the option of an evening meal, at an additional cost of €30.00 per person (2 courses). We grow most of our own food so you are guaranteed quality and deliciousness! Let us know if you would like to avail of this option. We can cater for most dietary requirements - vegetarian, keto, paleo... just let us know in advance. We are wine drinkers and offer a small selection of wine at cost price, or if you'd prefer to bring your own that's fine too! We have quite a repertoire of dishes from traditional Irish/European fare to Indian dishes that we offer guests - Alfie’s (almost famous) pork burgers, Margaret’s sausage casseroles or her Pork Larb. We can also cater for vegetarians and Alfie does some pretty stunning vegetarian pizzas among other dishes. If animals are your thing, you're in luck. We share our smallholding with a couple of dogs and a cat, hens, chickens, ducks, turkeys and rare breed Saddleback pigs and Zwartbles lambs. You're welcome to help out, and your safety is always our primary concern. If you'd like to bring your dog along, please just ask us. We would ask that they are used to hens and ducks (our birds roam freely on the property) and also that they have up to date vaccinations - both for your dog's safety and ours. We also run courses here at Oldfarm - pig rearing and bread making. The pig-rearing course is a day long course where we share our knowledge of keeping pigs in as natural a way as possible. Our bread making course is based on an Irish Soda Bread recipe - used three different ways - during the 4 hour course you will learn to make a traditional soda bread, griddle bread and a focaccia. Bread making course can be arranged during your stay (€30). Some points to note: Unfortunately there is no public transport, so your own transport is essential. There is lots of safe parking space on the property. This is an old house - the stairs are steep for anyone with mobility issues or those with young children. About us: Former Dublin city dwellers, we came to North Tipperary almost fourteen years ago. We found this lovely rural community, who welcomed us with open arms. Our home needed a lot of work when we arrived (and indeed it's still a work in progress) but we've restored and refurbished over the years. We now run our free-range pork business from home, selling our delicious pork directly to the customer. (website hidden) We love it, and we think you will too. You can read about our life (and see some of our recipes) via our blog ayearinredwood or if you're into free-range pigs, check out our website : Oldfarm We look forward to welcoming you to our authentic Irish home.
Our neighbourhood is a rural farming area. And, of course, you are most welcome to watch (or help) with pigs and lambs :)

Writers have also found it ideal for the inspiration of new work, or putting the finishing touches to a soon-to-be-published novel. Others in the spheres of art have stayed too: musicians, dancers, actors. And people from the States, Canada, Germany, France, England, Italy, New Zealand, South America and many Irish! Please read on for the essential details and options: * The accommodation is upstairs and has comfy, adaptable divans (not full beds). There is a tiny kitchen space with cooker, fridge, microwave, toaster and kettle. Coffee and teas are provided, as well as a basic amount of glasswear, crockery and cutlery, pots and pans. * A small shower-bathroom/loo (with towels, shampoos etc provided). * A tiny balcony for sunny sitting. * Breakfasts for those choosing semi-self-catering, are served downstairs in the gallery. With seating upon the antique Irish settle bed and antique chairs. (This overlooks the courtyard garden.) * CD player and radio. * Available for single nights, A TWO NIGHT STAY is preferred, and the nightly price is discounted for 3 or more nights (up to 7 nights.) NOTE - Nota Bene! The Sleeping Arrangements: * The beds are divans - adaptable platforms with comfy, foam mattresses. These are narrower than the standard single beds at 2 foot wide (600mm) x 6 foot long. The set-up options are for two, separate, single divans, or confirgured as a double (4 foot x 6 foot). Hence the very reasonable price to stay! The bedding of duvets and pillows (feather and foam) with freshly laundered sheets and towels are of course provided. There are extra blankets too. * Whether staying one night or more, visitors are entitled to a €2 discount on the entry ticket to the demesne. (Note: this is entry to the gardens and Historic Science Centre. The castle, being a home, is only open for short periods with a guided tour that must be booked ahead. It is worth extending a stay in town to experience more of the area - making sure to take in The Famous & Notables of Birr Trail, created by two Birr artists as well as trips to bogs or further for boat tours. * As this is a working arts studio, visitors need to be aware there are rather arty elements as part of the unique experience of staying here, from the big, papier maché fish suspended from the ceiling; art materials and publications, with paintings, photographs and wood carvings on show too. Visitors may of course use the art materials for sketching and painting. * Breakfast Options - 'High Breakfast' or 'Low Breakfast': Breakfasts are served in the gallery from 9.15am, to bring in fresh bread from the bakery. However, prior arrangements can be made to leave in cereals, milk and more to make a good, earlier repast possible. * Included in the price as offered, is the Tin Jug Studio breakfast, greatly complimented by those who have stayed and loved it: A delicious and attractively presented Breakfast Basket includes a healthy repast with local and largely organic foods. Please note that dietry options are also happily catered for. - 'Low breakfast' is something new on offer and for which please request an Airbnb 'Special Offer' discounted price. This is simply pared down to fresh fruit juice and fresh croissants (or wholewheat seeded bread, or scones) from the local bakery. There are of course plenty of award-winning cafés close by such as Nutmeg, Emma's, The Red Apple and The Loft for 'yummy' breakfasts with cappucinos. - A cooked course is also possible, at extra cost for one-night stays, or free with two to three-night stays and more. * The arts studio is entered by a separate entrance from the street. Once inside, it is mostly very quiet - some noise in the daytime from the yard over the wall, and some traffic noise. Usually very quiet at night. Being in the 'Centre of the Universe', Birr is a lovely heritage town in the heart of the country. It is at the confluence of routes from North to South, East to West and was once within the ancient fifth province of Mide. It is where the Cain Adamhnán - The Law of The Innocents was enacted well over 1300 years ago, when bishops and noblemen travelled to meet in Biorra to enact this remarkable law. There is so much to see and enjoy, which is not always well-promoted and is thus only well appreciated from experience. Yes, there are mountains for glorious un-touristy walks - soon cycling too - and this being the monastic Midlands there are places sacred to tread and marvel at, which once drew peole from all over Europe to study with the scholastic monks. Great river and lough trips give another flavour to visiting our 'boggy centre', where plains of healing herbs for grazing animals in Summer, and where migratory birds come to the Callows when the landscape changes to flood-lakes in the Winter. Brendan House and Tin Jug Studio as a special place to stay whilst visiting all in and around the town, and for further explorations in the region and beyond. Our home and arts studio are a mere five minute walk from the main attraction, Birr Castle Demesne and Historic Science Centre. It astounds visitors to hear of the Parsons' family remarkable achievements and international impacts in astronomy, engineering and much more - all beginning in little Birr. Look up I-LOFAR for the latest news on Birr's role in monitoring the sun. But you may find your own ancestral or cultural connections to this town too. With its astoundingly significant histories and its people of present and past eras, who have made their own marks locally, nationally and internationally. There are a number of terrific arts festivals in Birr, aspects of which are largely centred within the Birr Theatre & Arts Centre. Seek out their website and Facebook page for upcoming events, performances, screenings, workshops etc. so perhaps time your visit for one of them. Tin Jug Studio may also be holding events or have artist-involvement during some of these festivals, but availability will be noted on the calendar. We have taken part in National Drawing Day annually (May) for many years. Art tuition can also be booked, for drawing and painting 'en plein air' with landscape artist Jock Nichol, or still life in the studio, with the resident artist, Rosalind. Our SEASONAL ARTS FESTIVALS: May: Music Festival June: Scripts Playwriting Festival (NOTE: for a week in July & October, we have our Writers' Residencies here.) August: Birr Vintage Week & Arts Festival October: OFFline Film Festival November: Hullabaloo Children's Arts Festival * Ask about special offers and options, which may include art tuition, pleasant pampering treats and guided hill walks, trekking on horseback in the hills, music nights at Leap Castle, etc., etc. * Bookable treats - at Tin Jug Studio: Reflexology with Brenda Kelly Abeyta - €50. Superb and immensly relaxing!
Birr is a charming Georgian Heritage town, with the impressive attraction of Birr Castle Gardens and Historic Science Centre. With its fascinating histories from monastic times onwards, it is a town strong in the arts and there are excellent community resources, including a fine theatre, town parks, an excellent leisure centre. There are great small shops, lovely cafés, a few of which serve locally grown and organic foods. They all have fine coffees and some bake their own breads and cakes and daily specials. Nearby, a few good restaurants for dinner - particularly the 'posh' gourmet Sanjay's Kitchen Indian restaurant and Spinners Bistro-Bar, on Castle Street. Pubs? Of course! A small list of recommended imbibing places is available in the rooms - there are assorted music nights, and occasionally there are art exhibitions on show. For very memorable and superb music nights at Leap Castle, enquire about getting advance notice, on the music promoters texting list. Leap Castle is home to the renowned tin whistler Sean Ryan, and is declared as 'Ireland's most haunted castle'. Open for unscary tours! A tranquil riverside walk, starting from the front door, and going into the countryside, woods and up a hill with evocative views is a very pleasant way to amble in peace for an hour or more. The little theatre has a very good seasonal programme - take a look at the Birr Theatre & Arts Centre website for current details and bookings. It is the hub for Birr's arts festivals, some seminars, and art exhibitions. Come by car if you're planning to tour the area and wider region. Head off for walks in the Slieve Blooms (bring good boots and appropriate wear. We have local maps to borrow or we can offer guided walks and picnics.) There's a bike park being created and routed in the mountains, and exciting downhill tracks at the Bike Park at Fairymount Farm - bikes are there for hiring. Also, lovely walking and cycling around Lough Boora and Sculpture Park near Kilcormac. If you must - there a very good course in Birr for 'goffers'. However, golfers prefer the hotels and very posh B&Bs but a non-golfing partner might enjoy a day's art-tuition, with refreshments, at Tin Jug Studio. (Please look at the Brendan House listing and our website for some more detailed information.)

They are ideal for complete beginners too. 6) Spa Treatments - Booking ahead is essential! For a superb massage in Lusmagh, reflexology in Clonfert, or facials, etc. in Birr.....(Please enquire) 7) Yoga and Meditation - Various options locally ..... Et Cetera..... Whether coming to attend a festival event, or going to the theatre for a play or music, or for a day’s walking or cycling in the Slieve Blooms; there is the essential inspirational visit to Birr Castle Demesne. Visitors staying here have a discounted entry and strolling around the gardens, eases frayed minds from busy times, And the Historic Science Centre astonishes. For those who need shopping, there are good places for gifts and fine clothing, as well as many good cafés for eating and pubs for imbibing, so Birr is well worth taking time to linger longer in. This B&B has been open for around 18 years and over those years, Irish and multi-national tourists, writers, poets, playwrights, storytellers and musicians, mountaineers and more have stayed at Brendan House (or 'The Flag House' as it has been nicknamed). All have greatly enjoyed their visits. Here is serenity behind the front door, though within short paces from the centre of happenings in this historic town. Lots of lovely touches in this arty home: antiques and art with stories; books on myriad topics; spring water and chocolate in the rooms and a silver tray in the tented corridor for making cups of herbal or oriental tea, at any time. Sit in a wing chair by the drawing room fire for the welcoming drink. Glossy magazines on architecture, design, art and country sports and a few board games too, from chess to Scrabble. No television but free WiFi, and a good selection of DVDs from blockbusters to some foreign and art films. In the morning, no need to rush to get dressed for the dining room. Dress up in one of the vintage dressing gowns and Moroccan slippers, for the elegantly presented, simple breakfast is brought to the rooms. It can include wholesome cereals with fresh fruits, local organic milk, fresh croissants or wholewheat bread from the bakery (two minutes from the front door). See below for 'the full Brendan House Breakfast Experience.' On request the night before, the local paper or a national daily paper can also be brought with the breakfast tray. Historical notes: Brendan House or 'The Flag House', is named for the Prayer Flags across its facade. Uncertain of its exact date, it may once have been two 17th century houses which were then converted to one, of Georgian style. As its original, elegant windows pre-date 1815, we can but guess at its venerable age. The original lane was widened around 1817 - no doubt demolishing homes in the process - to give access from the main street and Market Square to then then newly built Catholic Church. (Both the Catholic and Protestant churches are cathedral-like in their presences and architecture.) The part of the street near the church is known as 'Chapel Lane' and the section near Market Square is Saint Brendan Street. Yet there has been no road sign to share the latter name, except for the very brief appearance of a fine cast iron sign around 6 years ago. On old market days, farmers traded on this street, Market Square and up Castle Street. The old pig market (bonmh) is now the centre for Birr Tidy Towns, with its outdoor classroom for children’s ‘growing’ workshops. STAYING - For those who wish to have an overnight but time-extended stay, to explore the Georgian heritage town of Birr, this is an ideal option: Early check-in; late check out. For this 'extended stay' - the brief getaway in Birr, visitors may check in early (from 11am on the arrival day) and check out the next day as late As 4pm, but bags can be left until around 5.30pm. Thus, a booking at Brendan House is more of a two-day, over one-night experience. Choose either the Red Room or the Grey Room. NOTE If two singles wish to come together, please write to request the special rate. . An option to linger longer over The Full Brendan House Breakfast Experience - a three course, much-praised breakfast, anytime from 9.30am up until midday is an additional cost. Mostly made with local, free-range, organic produce, meaty breakfasters might try Paul’s superb sausages, rashers and white pudding with a local farm hen or duck egg. But fish-lovers can try smoked salmon or smoked mackerel with or without a choice of eggs, and vegetarians and vegans will also leave the breakfast table feeling well-filled. Relax, eat, or even snooze afterwards. Afternoon tea upon antique china and linens, by the drawing room fire, can also be booked ahead. Before bed, have a deep, scented bath in the candlelit bathroom. Optional Extras . . . For an extra charge.... 1) Before or after your deep bath by candlelight, a glass of Prosecco or Elderflower Pressé with a gourmet chocolate, made in Birr. 2) The single visitor may prefer a glass of wine, light supper with homemade soup, or pudding and coffee, 3) What can be booked ahead is a wonderful Reflexology treatment in the house, with Brenda Abeyta, a superb reflexologist from Clonfert. Utterly relaxing! 4) We can add in a guided walk into the countryside, by the river and through woodlands or a visit to our local bogs, or a longer walk in the mountains, with or without a picnic. 5) A couple of hours of untaxing art tuition (tailored for beginners) in our art studio. INCLUDED: Brendan House is very close to the main attraction of Birr Castle Demesne. People staying at The Flag House and studio, are entitled to a €2 discount on their entry fee. Visitors can also explore the elegant streetscapes. There are two town trails. Discover the recently artist-created Famous & Notables of Birr Trail and find out about the histories of some of Birr's remarkable people from past eras, who made their impact locally, nationally and internationally. Brendan House or 'The Flag House', is named for the Prayer Flags across its facade. Uncertain of its exact date, it may once have been two 17th century houses which were then converted to one, Georgian style. As its original, elegant windows pre-date 1815, we can but guess at its venerable age. For single visitors there is a choice of two elegant bedrooms: The Grey Room or The Red Room. The Grey Room is more feminine in decoration (though men have enjoyed it too!) with a French style canopy bed and antique fashion prints on the walls. Interesting visitors who have stayed include a noted Australian poet, a renowned Irish Jazz pianist, and an Austrian flautist and composer who plays in concerts around the world. The Red Room has a more baronial style, with an oak bed and furniture, tapestries, period prints, brass rubbings and other artwork. The washhand basin is Moroccan copper. An Everest-summiting, Irish mountaineer stayed in this room, as have various distinguished writers and poets from Ireland and abroad. The two rooms share the bathroom with its antique bath. It was the second bath with running water, installed in Birr in the 19th century, and restored to its bright, original colours when the present owners bought the house. However, when a tranquil 'extended stay' is booked for one person, then only this booking is taken and the bathroom is only for the use of the one overnight visitor. It is only shared if a second visitor books to come with the first. In the evening, visitors are offered a welcoming drink - one of local Wild Food Mary's delicious liqueurs, by the drawing room fireside. In each room there are some of the lovely extra touches provided: apart from the vintage dressing gowns and Moroccan slippers to step into, bottled spring water and good chocolate, tissues and silver clothes brushes, as well as some pencils and paper for sketching or writing. *** No need to get dressed for breakfast! Breakfasts are served at a leisurely pace, brought up to the guest wing from around 9.15am (onwards 'til 11.30ish). For one-night stays in the single rooms, the breakfast offered is the lighter version, of two courses include healthy cereal, local organic milk and organic yoghurt or fruit plate and fresh juice, as well as choice of tea or coffee with a fresh croissant, scone, or delicious wholewheat bread fresh from the bakery. A third course of a cooked breakfast is an option. Not necessarily the usual sausages and rashers but a varied and unusual offering, from fishy to veggie and meat free as well as Vegan. Eggs will always be free range hen, but sometimes duck or quail eggs are available. PLEASE NOTE: There are no televisions but plenty of books, on a very wide variety of topics. If it isn't visible, just ask and we may have a book on a subject that interests you. We have a large collection of DVDs and videos for viewing - from 'Hollywood' to foreign fillms; costume dramas to comedy. *** Whilst the rate-per-room is as shown, it is possible for two single people to request a special rate when bookings are for two people, staying 1, 2 or 3 nights. However, it is an ideal place for the solo traveller and sightseer who would love to have the ultimate in rest and relaxation, or recuperation-time for gathering thoughts; creative time for writing; strolling, sketching or more activity with mountain walks. * REFLEXOLOGY - A treatment-massage of the feet by a superb practitioner of this healing, holistic art, Brenda. She can come to Brendan House with all that's needed, from the reclining chair to her homemade oils. The treatment itself lasts for approximately 50 minutes - with a necessary few questions at the beginning. Cost €55. (Or alternatively, attend her treatment room in Clonfert - cost €40 - and pay a visit to the ancient Clonfert Cathedral, etc. afterwards.) * Hacking on horseback along Slieve Bloom trails. (Check cost ahead at booking time) * A short or longer guided walk in the Slieve Blooms, with a picnic lunch. (€35 - €50) * Experienced walkers may borrow local maps for delightful loop walks, and more. Flask of soup or coffee offered for no extra charge. * An holistic treatment at Salann na Talún, Lusmagh. This is around 12 km from Birr. (There is a lovely bird hide on the way back, for bird watchers to view the migratory flocks on the Callows in Winter.) Whilst there are a number of treatment options for which costs need to be requested, Maureen offers superb massages for approximately €50. To avoid undoing the relaxing experience, we can arrange a taxi to collect and return visitors to Birr. * An excellent spa treatment at Secret Essence - a few paces away from Brendan House, on Main Street. All sorts of delicious facials, heated stone-massages and much more, from nail-work to waxing too! Audrey may need advance booking of at least 10 days to 2 weeks. * Art: Tutorials 'en plein air' with noted landscape artist, Jock Nichol - painting and sketching for a morning/afternoon or full day. Usually in the Slieve Blooms, woodlands in the foothills, or other lovely wild and peaceful locations in the area. (Enquire about his fees...but around 60 euros per day.) Other art tutorials may be possible too.) OTHER POSSIBILITIES....for exploring a wider area of this lovely region . Of ‘THE MIDDLE KINGDOM’ Gardens and houses open to the public, music nights at pubs or at Leap Castle.... Just enquire!
One of many good things about this elegant, fascinating small town is that it has a range of lovely shops, a beautiful theatre, town walks and parks, and is close to the Slieve Blooms for wilder walking. It has a strong arts and science heritage and culture. Around 80% of County Offaly professional artists live in and around Birr in the present day and in the past, there have been many remarkable people associated with Birr. [More to come in this overview, but I hope it encourages visitors to make the trip, as well as to stay. Just send a message to ask questions.)

Birr, County Offaly, Irland

The pink house is a lovely detached house in the centre of Ballinahown village that dates back to the 1820’s. The living room /dining room - to the right of the front entrance is bright and the sash windows add great character This adjoins the galley kitchen. Living room 2 links with the kitchen. The bathroom and utility are downstairs. There are 3 bedrooms , 2 x double beds , 1 x king bed and single ; all upstairs. The house is full of character. There is private off street parking.
This pink house was the original parish residence and built in the early part of the 1800’s. It has been completely refurbished so no worries about living in the last couple of centuries. It’s a traditional two storey farmhouse residence - similar to those all over Ireland - but larger as it was built for the parish priest. Helen has maintained as many original features in this unique building and it really gives a sense of space with ceilings over three metres high. There’s oil heating throughout and an open fire downstairs. The house is spacious - the front living room has a large couch, a couple of armchairs - a dining table and there is still room for a large desk to use for work if necessary. The back living room is home to a chesterfield couch and armchair and really cosy. The galley kitchen while small relative to the living space - is home to all you need to cook and live here like home. Upstairs the double bedrooms are quite large with wardrobes and seating / storage. The main bedroom is home to a king bed, single bed - large table, couch and bookcase - in addition to a large wardrobe . It’s pretty much half the upstairs space. The bathroom and utility are downstairs - and while small - again have all you need to live here in comfort. The house is unique, cosy and quirky. Across the street is the Celtic Roots Studio, an artisan studio. It is open to the public during the holiday season or by appointment in winter.
Ballinhaown village is an award-winning location in County Westmeath on the borders Co Offaly. The village is Tidy towns winner in County Westmeath and bronze medal winner at a national level. The village itself is host to my studio (Celtic Roots) and also a great local pub. The village has a super local shop, garage and even an agri-supplies. The community hall in the centre of the village is host to every activity from dancing, cards, art and music. The community itself is very active in sustainability and development. There's a sculpture trail adjoining the sportfield and playground. We are very close to the ancient monastic Clomacnoise and also 15 minute drive to Athlone town. We are very central to all of Ireland and easy driving to most coastal counties. But there is so much to see in our region. Be sure to check out our local tourism site. www.athlone.ie
