A 400 year old 'A' listed historic mill in a magical location. Set in 14 acres of rivers, waterfalls, ancient woodland with abundant wildlife, all under the famous Galloway night skies. Fabulous, hiking biking and watersports are on your doorstep.
Ironmacannie mill has serviced the local population for over 400 years as a grain mill until it was converted into a dwelling house in 1990. It sleeps a maximum 10 people.; 3 bedrooms and a couple of fold down beds. It is decorated very simply with real materials and a rustic palate. It has 2 bathrooms and an extra loo. The machinery room holds much of the original machinery of the mill, which can still turn when the water is diverted to the wheel. The ancient kiln room door at the back takes you directly into the river. If you are only wishing to book two nights please read the 'other things to note ' section at the end of the description.
The hidden road is a special place, it has abundant wildlife, magical bent and twisted oaks and winding waterways. The local area has many sporting and touristic activities, but we most like the diverse subculture. You don't have to look far to find a unusual happening, alternative thinkers musicians and artists lurk around every corner. Watch out! We are proud to announce, that resident Freya Morton will be offering circus skills workshops: trapeze and acrobalance from April onwards. If you want to treat your self, Freya is also qualified to give therapy & sports massage.

Xx

  • Fantastisk sted. Fantastisk beliggenhet. Stor verdi for pengene!

The Old Post Office is a cosy little cottage on the High street of Scotland's smallest Royal Burgh. It was built in 1835 and was one of the many homes the local Post office has enjoyed over the centuries. There are steps up to the entrance and the staircase is quite steep and narrow so not suitable for all. The bedroom and bathroom are snug with low ceilings. The kitchen diner has a log burner for keeping the cottage toastie.
The old post office is a lovely quirky cozy cottage set on the high street of Scotlands smallest Royal Burgh right in the heart of one of the most beautiful and bypassed areas of Britain. Only a few miles from the galloway forest the first Dark skies area in the UK. The area is stunningly beautiful with lots to see and do with the cottage only a stones throw from shop, post office, the smithy tea room and the catstrand art centre.

It has an excellent network of facilities for visitors which also links to the 7Stanes Mountain Bike routes. The forest park can be accessed by car, cycle and on foot and the Raiders Road forest drive is open at selected times of the year for cars to drive through less accessible parts of the forest. Middle cottage is a modern wing of our 19th century house, nestled within farmland in a secluded and rural location, with distant views of the Cumbrian fells and the Isle of Man. We think our location is very special. Our cottage is comfortable, spacious and well equipped, with attention to detail to ensure our guests have a truly memorable stay.

We want you to be able to appreciate our location as much as we do, so encourage you to spend time in and exploring our garden with lawns, wildlife area, burns and animals. But if you want to just sit back and enjoy the view then there is a patio accessed from the living space.

I am offering a very comfortable single bed in my spare room / study for short stays for those travelling through Dumfries and Galloway SW Scotland, and just need a bed for a night or two. The Cottage sits on a farm between Balmaclellan, St John't Town of Dalry and New Galloway - not far from the Southern Upland Way the Galloway Forrest Park. You will be sharing the cottage with myself and my 3 dogs. There is private parking, shelter for a bike and great views.
Grennan Cottage is a long cottage - it was formally two farm workers cottages converted into one. It sits SSW so gets the weather full on, be that full sun or the wind and rain - it can be quite dramatic! The cottage is surrounded by it's own garden and at night there is no ambient light. The cottage and your room is comfortable, light, bright and warm. You will have access to rest of the cottage and there will be space in the fridge if you want to store any food / milk etc. There will be a kettle with a mug, tea and coffee in your room and tea and coffee available in the kitchen. I am lactose intolerant so there will be non dairy milk such as coconut / almond or oat milk available. If you would like to cook something to eat then I am quite happy for you to do so as long as it doesn't smell the house out and you clean up after yourself. There is NO MICROWAVE! I will provide towels for you and there will be Arbonne toiletries in the bathroom that you can use - all of which are vegan, gluten, paraben and cruelty free so they are all good for your skin. I have no TV - but there is WIFI so you can connect with people during your stay. There is also generally good mobile phone signal (EE)
The Clachan Inn in St John's Town of Dalry is very highly recommended and is only 1.4 miles away - I suggest you book a table in advance as it is popular! There is also a village shop and post office in the village. The Catstrand (Arts centre and cafe) in New Galloway is 1.8 miles from the cottage, New Galloway also has an excellent Village shop which has a great variety of foods, and the Smithy Cafe is also there. Balmaclellan Village shop is 2.1 miles from the cottage. The Galloway Forrest Park is only a few miles away. Clatteringshaws Loch is 7.8miles. Loch Ken is only a mile or so down the road and there is a an activity centre with cafe and a sailing centre.

Get away from it all at Hazelnut Yurt, located in beautiful rural Galloway, just 10 minutes from Loch Ken. The yurt sleeps up to 2 adults and 2 kids and is set in a really special wee spot on our ten acre smallholding – completely secluded, it’s nestled amongst the hazelnut trees, by a stream, with just the birds for neighbours. Outside, you can enjoy a fire by the water or a sundowner on the outdoor seating. A picture window and woodburner mean you can enjoy the setting, no matter the weather.
Open from spring break till the end of September, Hazelnut Yurt gives you an opportunity to completely get away from it all. No traffic noise, no light pollution, no other guests – just beautiful scenery and the sounds of nature around you. Wildlife is everywhere - red squirrels, woodpeckers, dragonflies, baby trout and minnows, red kite and ducks are just some of the things you can see in this idyllic spot. We are on the edge of the Dark Skies Park, so the stargazing is fantastic. You can sit on the bank of the stream by the campfire and completely switch off. The yurt is a romantic space, cosy and well appointed, tucked away in amongst the trees. You have the place all to yourselves and as seasoned campers ourselves, we've tried to think of everything so you can relax in total comfort. The yurt is on the edge of our ten acre smallholding, set in a hazelnut grove by a stream. Around you is only meadow and woodland - our farmhouse is a five minute walk away. For families, there are no cars to worry about; kids can explore the site, climb trees, try and catch tiddlers in the burn or come and say hi to our animals. Parents of wee ones should be aware that the stream is a few metres away from the yurt – this is part of what makes this place special, but kids should be supervised at all times. The yurt can cater for two adults plus we can accommodate up to 2 kids under 6 free of charge, see below for beds info. We will also take up to two well behaved dogs - please see our house rules for more info. The yurt has a king size bed with memory foam mattress, and on request we can additionally provide a travel cot or up to two small floor mattresses for kids under 6. All bedding is supplied, along with hot water bottles and blankets just in case! The yurt is fully kitted out and completely off grid – heat is from a woodburning stove, we have 12V power for charging phones, a double ringed gas stove with grill and a small outdoor washing up station with washing up equipment provided. There are comfy seats for sitting round the stove and a small dining table with chairs. There is both indoor and outdoor crockery and a kettle, pots, pans and cooking utensils; we will provide you with tea, coffee, 5 litres of drinking water and a cool box with ice packs on arrival. The eco compost loo is a few metres away from the yurt – far enough away for privacy but not too far if you need to find it in the middle of the night. The shower cubicle backs on to the loo - it's rustic but it's warm! Towels are provided. There is a campfire a few metres from the yurt under an awning by the stream so you can sit out whatever the weather and also a firepit which you can put wherever you fancy - you’re welcome to use either. We also provide outdoor seating and a table and some outdoor beanbags. The yurt itself was handmade in Scotland and is particularly special because of its large window which makes the space light and airy, and means you can sit here in all weathers and enjoy the lovely view out on to the hazels and stream beyond. It also gives you line of sight to a good camofire spot, which might be useful if you have kids in bed. As a guest you can also make use of our ‘rec barn’, which is a large barn up in our courtyard which is five minutes’ walk from the yurt. We also use this space. Here you have access to WiFi, a pool table, table football, music system, woodburning stove with sofas, large dining table, microwave and fridge freezer, as well as a play kitchen and other kids toys. Handy if it's rainy. The fee includes a basket of wood for the fire and five litres of drinking water. If you need more accommodation, or are coming with kids who are getting too old to want to share space, we can provide a tent pitch a few metres away from the yurt. There's an additional charge for this - get in touch if this is something you'd like to arrange.
Nearby there is plenty to see and do - the whole area is renowned for its beautiful scenery, good walking and bird watching. Loch Ken is a five minute drive away where you can kayak, swim, fish, or head to the Galloway Activity Centre which rents out equipment and does lessons in everything from paddle boarding to power boating. Half an hour away is the coast, with plenty of unspoilt sandy beaches and attractions such as Cream O’Galloway which has an outdoor adventure park and amazing ice cream made on site. The food town of Castle Douglas is twenty minutes away and has everything you need – supermarkets, petrol stations, banks, a range of eating options, a brilliant artisan bakery and a swimming pool. Twenty minutes in the other direction is St John's Town of Dalry and our favourite (and award winning) pub the Clachan which has great food, good draught beers and a lovely cosy interior.

Welcome to my cottage in the picturesque village of St John's Town of Dalry. It is a traditional Scottish cottage located on the village's second street, meaning peace and quiet are the order of the day. The cottage is cosy, comfortable and well equipped with all the essentials required for a self catering holiday.
The cottage was originally built in 1870, with the kitchen and bathroom part of the house only being added in the mid 20th century. Even with the addition, the cottage is quite compact at 600 square feet or about 67 square meters. In recent years the cottage has undergone a complete modernization, including refurbishing the kitchen and bathroom to more contemporary standards.
Galloway is all about the outdoors. Cycling, mountain biking, walking, hiking and mountaineering opportunities abound, from the coast to the hill tops. All levels of difficulty and distance of hiking are easily accessible from the village, from a quick walk up the Mulloch hill behind the cottage to the peaks of the Rhinns of Kells and the Southern Upland Way long distance footpath which passes through the village. Galloway also has enough crags to keep any rock climber busy. Watersports, including canoeing, sailing and water skiing are available on Loch Ken. Golf, fishing and shooting can also be participated in locally. After all that fresh air and exercise, you may be hungry, thirsty or both. Dalry has two pubs: The Clachan Inn, which serves an award winning menu and a rotating selection of craft beers, and the Lochinvar Hotel. Both are located at the bottom of the hill. The town of Castle Douglas, about 30 minutes away has a well-deserved reputation as "Food Town". Several real butchers and bakeries, and a fishmonger will tempt you with their extremely high quality wares. Castle Douglas also offers a surprisingly eclectic mix of shops for a town of its size. Dumfries and Galloway enjoys a thriving arts scene, including an annual festival. The Catstrand in nearby New Galloway is a combination venue and gallery and a great source of information about arts happenings in the region. Across the burn from the Catstrand you will find The Smithy, one of many excellent local tearooms. For history buffs, there are numerous castles within easy striking distance of the village, including Kenmure, Doon, MacLellan, Threave, Drumlanrig, Caerlaverock and Culzean. From even earlier times, Roman and Pictish forts dot the hilltops and Hadrian's Wall is only a couple of hours away. Fans of the poet Robert Burns will find Dalry's location ideal as it is almost equidistant from both Dumfries and Alloway, between which he spent the most significant parts of his life and where you will find museums in his honour. Dalry sits at the edge of the Galloway Forest Park, which at 300 square miles is Britain's largest forest park and is one of only a few "Dark Sky Parks" in the world. Stargazers can visit the observatory by appointment. The forest can be explored by car via the Carrick Glen and Raider's Road forest drives, where a wide variety of wildlife might be encountered. Less patient animal lovers are catered for at the forest park's Red Deer Range and Wild Goat Park. The goats are actually quite friendly and make decent picnic companions. Ornithologists should bring their binoculars; there is a wide range of bird life in the area, from red kites, buzzards and falcons, to various tits and finches. The cottage has bird feeders in the garden. Feel free to fill them using the bird seed in the summer house and enjoy the show as you work in the kitchen. Please do not let the blackbirds come into the house! Rabbits and hedgehogs are also frequent visitors to the garden.

What was once a chicken shed is now a sweet, cosy cottage perfect for families, adventurers, readers, writers, nature lovers. There are two bedrooms (one king size bed, two singles), a wood burning stove, lovely fresh décor with character, books, a new kitchen, stunning views. You can explore beautiful beaches, great small towns, rolling hills or just enjoy looking out the window. You'll hear owls, see hares and red kites and get a taste of this undiscovered corner of Scotland.
We are happy for you to bring your dog with you. Please ensure it's clean when it comes in from walking, and don't let it get up onto the furniture. Also, please don't leave your dog in the cottage by itself at all. There is plenty of outdoor space and if you close the gates the area around the cottage is dog-proof (except if you've got a tiny dog or a super jumper!). Please tidy up after your dog if it poos, and ensure your dog doesn't bother sheep or cows in neighbouring fields.
When we are not around, our neighbours Chris and Heather at Nether Glaisters look after the cottage for us. You will find their contact details in the pack in the cottage. The cottage is in a very rural farming area. Please ensure that you respect the rules of the countryside, particularly concerning dogs and livestock. The road leading to the cottage is quite rough at the moment. Beware of potholes and please drive carefully. It is a long way to the nearest shop. We strongly recommend stocking up at one of the supermarkets in Dumfries (you pass them on the A75 as you drive through Dumfries towards Stranraer) or Castle Douglas. The little shop at the junction in Crocketford is well stocked and sells lovely local honey, jam and cheese, homemade tattie scones as well as papers etc. Please support this shop!

Dumfries and Galloway is one of Scotland's best kept secrets with its unspoilt coast line, varied countryside, and mild climate influenced by the Gulf Stream. The roads are quiet, the towns and villages provide lots of things to do and see, but above all you will find the people friendly and helpful.
