La Conner's Kahlo Cottage is an inviting eclectic space surrounded by lush evergreens and only steps to the beach. The rural neighborhood is small with a friendly vibe. The historic waterfront town of La Conner is a short 8 minute drive where you will find art, culture, amazing restaurants and great shops to explore. Whether you're on a solo adventure, enjoying time as a couple, or exploring the area with a friend or family member, Kahlo Cottage is the perfect place to relax and enjoy!
Kahlo Cottage is tucked in among tall pines at the bottom of a little hill. It doesn't get much of any "traffic" since the little street ends a few houses down. It is across the street from the houses that sit above the water and there is public beach access/stairs just a few steps away. From the house and the slightly elevated property it sits on, you have a beautiful view over the roofs and through the trees of the water and Hope Island, directly across the water. Hope Island is small and uninhabited but full of nature and fun explore if you have a kayak or small boat. You will also get to see some amazing sunsets from the Cottage!
Inside the 400 plus square foot somewhat rustic cottage you will discover an open floor plan, (aside from the bathroom). The decor is colorful and eclectic, with lots of vintage treasures. The kitchen side provides you with everything you will need to prepare food, cook food, and eat food. There is an apartment sized real stove/oven, as well as an apartment sized refrigerator. Additional appliances such as a microwave, toaster (on shelf under the microwave) and coffee maker are also there for your convenience. We even have a french press should you prefer to use it, as well as a tea infuser and lots of choices of tea bags too! Pots, pans, dishes, drinking and wine glasses, cutlery, etc. is provided as well. There are even cloth napkins and candles for a bit of added ambiance! The little kitchen table is a drop leaf, so it takes up minimal space in the center of the room. It is also easy to move aside so that you can spread a couple of yoga mats down (provided) to begin your morning by saying Namaste!
The queen size bed is sooooo comfy and is adorned with comforters, blankets and shams from one of my favorite stores (Anthropologie)
There are plenty of extra throw blankets to snuggle up with while watching television or just relaxing in the living area on the little settee with a good book.
There is a small desk in front of one of the windows that will provide you a space to sit and use for tasks (if you have to bring your work with you!) and there is of course wifi and internet connection.
The bathroom is separate with a regular door that closes for privacy. There is a shower stall, toilet, and sink. It is well stocked with fluffy towels, shampoo, soap, lotion, paper products, and even a hair dryer.
While there is no closet in the cottage, there is a dresser with drawers you can utilize and a standing coat rack that you can hang your coats and sweaters on. Just outside the back door there is a small shed where we keep outdoor folding furniture, a portable propane bbq and accessories to enjoy the outdoors. You will also find a hammock and fire pit (please be mindful of burn bans during warmer/dry months).
While there is no AC unit, the cottage is located close to the water, is facing west, and is surrounded by tall trees. Even in the warmest months, it is rarely too hot in the cottage. Aside from the windows that open, there is a front and back door that also both have screen doors that provide ample air flow.
This quaint little neighborhood is referred to as the "Hope Island" neighborhood. Hope Island is actually the small island across the water. It is a great place to explore by kayak or boat. Bring a little picnic lunch and stay for the afternoon! Of course, we have an amazing beach right here with quick easy access where you will see all kinds of birds and other wild life, and have fun searching for sea glass, agates and shells.
The historic quaint town of La Conner, just a 10 minute drive (3 miles), is a MUST to explore. La Conner is filled with art, culture, and amazing shops and restaurants. Many of the restaurants sit right on the water! Some of my favorite spots in town are included in the pictures we have provided and we are always happy to suggest more!
La Conner has locally grown organic produce stands plus artisan cheeses, dairy, shellfish, fruit and berries are close by. There are multiple festivals in the area including The Tulip Festival, The Poetry Festival, Quilt Festival, Arts Alive, and The Family Farm Festival. We even have a Smelt Derby! Many famous artists have resided here...Guy Anderson, Morris Graves, Richard Gilkey, and Barbara and Clayton James to name a few. Of course, many talented well known artists, writers, and poets call La Conner their home today. You will discover venues in La Conner, Mt. Vernon and Anacortes for music, theater and cultural events year round. Skagit Valley is filled with history, great shopping, antiques and more--all with a small town charm. Hike and explore tide pools at Deception Pass State Park, or the many other fantastic hikes from easy to advanced in nearby surrounding areas. Ski and snowboard at Mt. Baker. Ferries to the other San Juan Islands are a short 15 minute drive away in Anacortes which is also a wonderful town to explore.
