Our house is close to the Simbacher city center (1.5 km) in the district of Erlach, very quiet, without any through traffic.
Hardly more - about 2 miles away - is the old Inn Bridge, on the middle of which the state border to Austria runs. The Inn, which is one of Germany's longest rivers, is here about 400 m wide and part of the Europe Reserve, an area that ranges 55 km downstream from Salzach River estuary near Marktl to Schärding. The wetland biotop of the Europe Reserve, created by the dams of the Inn, offers numerous animals and birds an ideal habitat. Guided walks with animal and bird watching take regularly place, particularly in the summer months. But you can also explore the European Reserve on your own, there are virtually no prohibitions and restrictions. Also exploring by canoe is possible.
On the Austrian side welcomes you the picturesque town of Braunau. Braunau has existed since the year 788, so that the city can look back on a long history. Today, the city in addition to its historic, small old town is also full of modern shops and shopping facilities.
From Braunau there are still a good 55 miles to the "City of Mozart" Salzburg. Salzburg and the "Salzburg Festival” is known worldwide and absolutely worth seeing. About an hour takes the trip to get there and it's worth it in any case.
Also worthwhile is certainly a side trip to Linz on the Danube (95 km), the third largest city in Austria. Also worthwhile is certainly a side trip to Linz on the Danube (95 km), the third largest city in Austria, which is already mentioned in Roman historiography.
Burghausen (25), Passau (55 km), Landshut (95) and Munich (110 km) from the German cities are especially very well known.
In Burghausen you can visit Europe's longest (about 1 km) castle complex or explore the old town situated along the Salzach River.
Landshut, the seat of government of Lower Bavaria, is situated on the Isar and has also a picturesque old town at the foot of the castle Trausnitz. Worldwide known is the "Landshut Wedding", a historic medieval festival, which takes place every four years, most recently in July 2013.
Under all circumstances worth a visit, often referred to as one of the most beautiful cities in the world, is Passau. In the "Three River City" flow the Inn and the Ilz into the Danube. The old town of Passau is certainly one of the most beautiful city centers among European cities. Overlooked it is from the Dom St. Stephan, which not only surpasses the famous namesake in Vienna, but also has the largest organ in the world.
To describe Munich, would lead too far at this point. The "world city with a heart" is always worth a visit and the only megacity in Bavaria.
Directly from our house, you can discover the region of "Schellenberg" on foot. On well-marked hiking trails you can get up to 580 meters high and has on a clear day from there a grand view onto a chain of mountains of the Alps about 300 km in length.
In addition to the public swimming pool in Simbach there are swimming pools in Braunau (3km) and Ering (12 km). Added to this are the natural riverside open-air baths at the Inn with gastronomy and sunbathing lawns at Marktl (17 km) and Kirchberg (8 km).
Particularly varied the Inn-Danube region is also for cyclists, since many smaller bike trails and the great biking trails at the Inn and the Danube offers something for every cyclist.
