Escape the hustle with a stay in our small, charmingly rustic home, located in a little Wisconsin town in the heart of the Driftless region. Our clean, well-maintained home has a comfortable lived-in feeling with distressed wood and painted surfaces, vintage furnishings, and an up-cycled thrift store vibe. The home is in La Farge, Wisconsin—a small village that has many amenities and is a quick 20-minute drive to Viroqua. Near the town's north edge lies the 8600-acre Kickapoo Valley Reserve.
Our home is modest and well-worn with some quirks. We try to offer guests what we are looking for when we stay with Airbnb – a clean and safe environment with a serviceable kitchen and a unique alternative to the local motel – all for a reasonable price.
The home will sleep up to four guests, with two full-size beds and one futon. The upstairs has two double beds, one in a bedroom with a door and the other in a walk-through bedroom that has a privacy screen. In the living room on the first floor there is a futon couch that opens to the size of a double bed.
The kitchen is fully equipped with all the basics: gas stove, toaster, microwave, coffee maker, electric kettle, slowcooker, blender, cookware, dishes, utensils, glasses, etc. One off-street parking space is included and there is ample street parking. Washer and dryer are on site. The single bathroom contains an antique clawfoot tub with shower conversion for showering or bathing.
The house sits on a corner lot in the village, with many flowers, shade trees, and fruiting shrubs in the yard, which attracts a variety of birds from the nearby woods. Often there is a resident house wren in the yard.
Our tiny little town of 750 people is located in the heart of the Driftless Area—a unique region of the Midwest full of tree-covered ridges, deep river valleys, and a unique karst geology that creates spring-fed streams, making it a premier trout fishing destination.
Although La Farge is a small town, it is much more than a stoplight town. In fact, there is no stoplight. But on main street, or walking distance to it, you will find many conveniences, such as a small grocery store, a gas station with mini mart, a hardware store, a building supply store, a thrift store, a restaurant, a bar, a library, a post office, a hair salon, a medical clinic, a chiropractic clinic, a dental clinic, an auto repair shop, a pottery store, a custom embroidery shop, a gift shop, a newspaper and printing shop, and the list goes on. On Saturdays in the summer, there is even a small farmer's market in town with Amish and local vendors. The village of La Farge also has its own campground with power and water hookups and shower facilities.
Just minutes away is the Kickapoo Valley Reserve—an 8600 acre tract of Wisconsin public land that with a visitor's pass is open to the public for hiking, biking, horse trail riding, canoeing/kayaking, camping, and hunting. The Kickapoo River runs along the west and south edge of town and is a popular canoeing/kayaking destination, with a boat landing right in the village and several shuttle services in the area. World-class trout fishing options abound locally as well.
On the north edge of town sits the headquarters of Organic Valley, a billion dollar cooperative of organic farmers and food brands, with an on-site cafe that is open to the public.
And near to La Farge you will find many other public lands (Wildcat Mountain State Park, Tunnelville Cliffs State Natural Area) and villages and small cities (Hillsboro, Westby, Viroqua, Cashton) to explore.
If you are a nature lover, the Driftless Area of Wisconsin is your paradise.
