Our property consists of two buildings made of handchipped stone: a house (for us) and a cottage/cabin (for you). The property relies on rainwater harvesting, and we have the world's most beautiful dry toilets! Free ADSL wifi. Breakfast included.

We are Sarah (British), Morten (Danish) and our Indian dog, Ashna.

The size of our property is 1.6 acres. It is unique in the sense that is has almost continous tree cover of a few hundred old rosewood, almond, mango, jackfruit and orange trees. Under the canopy we grow coffee (Arabica, Robusta and Liberica), but our priority is to create a space where fauna and flora will prosper. Consequently, the property feels like a small forest, an oasis away from the concrete jungle and mono-crop plantations where most of the tourist accommodation is located. On the property, we have identified around 40 different bird species, and mammals like slender loris, wild boar, porcupine and mouse deer.

Tilgang for gjester

Our guest cottage is in its own private and quiet part of the property (1 acre) where no one else has access.

The main building, where we stay, is located 50 metres from the cottage. Meals and laundry facilities are available in the main building.

Interaksjon med Gjester

We only have guests when we are also on the property, and as we spend 11 months of the year here, we are almost always open.

Our approach to running our micro B&B is that we spend the time required to make our guests feel comfortable, i.e. we are happy to give you a guided local walk or take you to one of the special restaurants, where we sometimes eat, but where tourists never go. But we are also happy to just advise, and let you get on with the various activities that are on offer in the area.

Andre ting å merke seg

As mentioned above, all stays include breakfast (continental with homemade bread, nut butters, fruit etc.). Other meals are available at a charge. The food is vegetarian/vegan. We are also happy to recommend restaurants that suit your budget and taste.

When you visit a new country, town or village, staying with people who live in and understand the environment is invaluable. Sarah and Morten not only provided information but went out of their way to facilitate opportunities to explore the local area and beyond, in a way that we would not have been able to do without their help. Staying in the cottage in the woods, provided us with privacy and serenity which Sarah and Morten mad a real effort to provide. The breakfast was fantastic with homemade peanut butter, traditional local samba and Dahl, freshly squeezed juices and bread. They provided torches and a local mobile phone and arranged tuk tuks for our local journey to the bustling town of Kamily. They also helped to organise transport to and from the cottage with a very reliable and safe driver....essential when in India! As hosts, Sarah and Morten have created a beautiful place to stay which is sensitive to the local environment. The traditional stone style cottage has everything you need for a comfortable stay; great bed, excellent composting toilet, good wifi, terrace to sit on and is situated in the forest where you will be woken by the sounds of nature which is pure joy.

Expect luxury with a little adventure thrown in. The eco-cottage is stunning and exactly as promised - in the middle of the forest with just the sounds of nature for company. It super clean and cosy, and the hosts have thought of everything to make your stay more comfortable. Sarah and Morten are delightful and a mine of information about Kerala and the local area. We were invited to their (beautiful) main house for breakfast and dinner - and were treated to a veritable vegan feast each time. We certainly didn't go hungry. Do come with an open mind: we had a day of unseasonal heavy rainfall and a unusually a raft of power cuts, both of which can happen anywhere in India. For us it just added to the adventure: our hosts had provided torches and candles and even washed our dirty flip-flops (thanks Sarah but presume that's not normally part of the package!).

Sarah and Morten have created a very special & unique Eco-home and we had a lovely few days sharing it with them. Environmental thinking is embedded in both building design and lifestyle. The cottage and house are stone built, modern and sleek with nice details like hand crafted Kerelan locks, a huge stone dinning table where you can share dinner cooked by Sarah, impressive curved stone staircases and of the best ever compost loo for two! You will be within woods surrounded by nature (so don't stay here if closeness to nature freaks you out) From the balcony of our cottage we saw woodpeckers, the bright eyes at night of slow loris (like a bush baby) and you may hear boar, porcupines and certainly plenty of birdsong. It's both alive and tranquil and in so many ways better than the nature reserve that everyone heads for. We did visit Periyar national park and enjoyed a guided walk away from the crowds but equally enjoyed walks close to the cottage - one with a stunning view of Tamil Nadu - Morten has done some great maps of walks straight from the house. Getting around is easy - Buses to Kumily are frequent and tuck tuks plentiful. Do be prepared to adapt a little - this is a proper Eco cottage, accept that rain water is precious, your shower may be shorter and the toilet doesn't flush, but that's not a bad thing. Breakfasts are lovely and healthy - curd, seasonal fruits, homemade jams, freshly baked bread and the best vegan cream cheese we have tasted. You can also choose to have dinner at the house (veggie / vegan) which we really enjoyed along with interesting chats, insight about living in Kerela. Thank you both for a great, memorable stay.
