The studio is built from natural materials and beautiful recycled fittings. It's attached to a house built from local timbers and insulated with wool - but is self-contained and private.
Undercover overnight charging for electric cars. Now with a fale with BBQ and food preparation space under cover.

Stedet
The main room is barrel-vaulted and lined with raw ply. No stains or other treatments. Fittings are good quality recycled pieces that give the space its unique and soft quality. All lighting is warm. Just outside is your own small garden space with a fale with a BBQ and food prep bench and sink. Beautiful in the morning sun and a romantic space to eat and relax in the evening. The alcove has a microwave, electric kettle and toaster, and a small fridge as well as cutlery and crockery. There'll be milk in the fridge and cereal and/or bread supplied if you'd like it.
This is a tranquil space in the country - mid-way between Auckland and Whangarei.

Gjestetilgang
You'll be free to use gardens and walk thru' the bush. There are rescue chooks (hens) and a small flock of sheep, and my cat roams the garden. There are lovely walks along country roads and there are parks and beaches nearby.

Andre ting det er verdt å merke seg
In the carport - under cover - is a charge point for electric-drive cars. We've calculated the cost of overnight charging - after guests drove one here from Auckland - and it's NZ$12. But I want to encourage this technology so it'll cost $10 per overnight charge. Much cheaper than gas.
The house itself looks over the North Auckland rail line and a wetland and the bird-life here is prolific. Tui, kereru (wood pigeon), piwakawaka (fantails), tiny waxeyes, pukekos and paradise ducks. And the Australasian harrier hawk or kahu. At night, when you're lucky, you'll hear the call of the ruru - the native owl.
And then there is the ubiquitous magpie - our 'Australian cousin'. Made famous in the poem by Denis Glover:

"When Tom and Elizabeth took the farm
the bracken made their bed
And quardle oodle ardle wardle doodle
the magpies said

Tom's hand was strong to the plough
Elizabeth's lips were red
And quardle oodle ardle wardle doodle
the magpies said

Year in year out they worked
while the pines grew overhead
And quardle oodle ardle wardle doodle
the magpies said

But all the beautiful crops soon went
to the mortgage man instead
And quardle oodle ardle wardle doodle
the magpies said

Elizabeth is dead now (it's years ago)
Old Tom went light in the head
And quardle oodle ardle wardle doodle
the magpies said

The farm's still there
Mortgage corporations couldn't give it away
And quardle oodle ardle wardle doodle
the magpies say"

The water supply here is rain 'harvested' and is delicious! Its use needs to be conserved tho' not 'religiously'. The same goes for 'waste'. No chemicals or non-biodegradable items down the drain please. Keep it clean for the animals, plants and birds!

Around me, apart from traditional farming people, there are artists, musicians, organic horticulturalists, writers and IT people and the Matakana markets and cinemas are reasonably close - (I'm assuming you'll have a car) - as are beaches and parks. Gibbs Farm Park with fabulous modern and massive contemporary sculpture is on the Kaipara Coast Highway/SH16. Booking is essential to see it all but many pieces can be seen from one of the side roads. Ask if you'd like more info on your drive up.

I'm a 3-Dimensional designer mostly working in film and television set design. But I'm also deeply interested in clean technologies and my own space reflects these values. In 2009 I returned to uni to do 4th year industrial design and refined the ideas for a solar/turbine/electric-drive railcar. Current thinking by Tesla and WrightSpeed reinforce the direction I believe we should be heading. In my own time I garden and design structures to aid nature. The last is a 'garden warming cube' called inQb8 - an early version of which I've been using over the last winter with success. I like good food and try to grow a lot myself - not always with success given my current workload. I've planted over 200 native and timber trees on my land and have a small flock of sheep and 'chooks' - (hens) - all with names! My very handsome cat rules my couch! I'm surrounded by talented people both at work and where I live. Ideas abound in both environments. And I'm a reader of contemporary fiction especially. It's ideas again! Essentially I'm a visual thinker and like to travel with sketchbooks and pencils. But at work I'm equally at home with electronic processes, e.g; Rhino, SketchUp, PhotoShop. A good friend called me a 'knowledgeable conversationalist' and I do like developing ideas - rather than small-talk. Although I'm a reasonably tidy person and like clear space and real materials - I'm not overly fussy. But I detest synthetics and find them ugly and distasteful to touch. I like to travel almost as much as I love my own space.
