The space is amazing. There is a huge gate that acts as the entrance to the house main house and also acts as a security measure. As you walk in, there is a manicured garden that features flowers, trees, cacti, and bushes. There is a driveway that is able to fit 2 vehicles comfortably and there is a covered space to protect one of the vehicles from any elements. The living space that’s listed is on the first floor and features an extensive living space and a tiled outdoor patio. There is an 8 foot wall that surrounds the premises which gives privacy to the house. The house was built about 10 years ago or so and the structure is in great condition. It’s beautiful and features screened windows, security doors at all entrances, running water, and regulated electricity, which is rare for the village community in which the house is situated.
This house is truly one of a kind. There is also a second floor apartment space that’s currently occupied by an American Peace Corps volunteer (me). The main house/living area on the first floor was occupied by an American missionary for the past 5 years and has been well taken care of and cared for. We also have 3 dogs on the premises, which are of the Basenji breed, or “African bush dogs.” They are wonderful. There is also a Beninese family on the premises but in a separate section of the property. They are relatives of the man who built the house about a decade ago (who died last year). They are friendly and welcoming. The area is safe. There is a guardian who comes to the house at night to watch the property. He often sleeps outside and in the mornings, he cleans the garden and helps with the dogcare.

Guests will have access to the main property/garden, clothing line/clothes washing area on the side of the house, and of course, the first floor living space of the house. There is a lot of space! Electricity is included and TV is available if you want it. It’s basic cable I believe. Guests will also be able to coordinate with the American volunteer if they need anything extra such as a first aid kit or any other kind of information or necessities.

I will interact with the guests as much as they would like. I’m very open to getting to know each other and making long-term friends. After all, I’ll be living upstairs.

The neighborhood is very nice and very simple. It’s au village, so it’s definitely not a city-like feeling or atmosphere. It’s not suburban either. People here are simple and basic. They tend to live in basic house, mostly without power or any amenties. The town is quiet and peaceful and relaxing. The house is near the main market in Doutou, where you’ll be able to access most items that you’ll need in life such as food and general services and products. Doutou isn’t too far from Come or Lokossa, which are the two bigger cities in the area which offer much more in terms of products, services, and access to supermarkets. The people in Doutou speak Sahoue and are friendly. The area is lush and somewhat hilly, but mostly flat. There is one main paved road near the house, but otherwise, there are many major dirt roads.

Getting around is easy. Everyone travels by Zémidjan (motorcycle). You pay a few hundred Francs to be taken safely and easily to your destination, depending on the distance. The roads are made of dirt and are bumpy in some areas. Cars are a more comfortable possibility, too, if you have one.

Power and water are included in the rent, but we ask that you do not waste resources because resources are limited. Sometimes, SBEE, the national electric company, cuts the power. It’s not often, but when they do, it’s not for long. If you like to garden, we’re in the process of building a new garden and compost pile that you can use. The bathing area that the Beninese family on-site uses is in the main garden area of the house, but it’s covered and private. You might see some of the family going back and forth to use the facilities, but they won’t be in your way. We also have the Basenji dogs. They will be around but won’t bother you. They usually stay around me. There are some furnishings in the house that are available for you to use, as pictured. The kitchen is pretty empty at the moment so if you like or want to cook there’s charcoal available or you can invest in a stove top gas burner with gas tank which is not expensive.

Hello everyone, I’m Frank. I’m currently a United Stated Peace Corps Volunteer living in Doutou, Benin. I teach English here to middle schoolers. Previous to this, I was living in New York City working in corporate America. I enjoy adventure in my life and I enjoy meeting new people. I believe that life is an experience, and much like Peace Corps, you get what you out into it. I’m friendly, fun, easy going, and very active. I like to cook, exercise, study language, travel, and make new friends. I’ve traveled internationally to Spain, Senegal, France, Switzerland, most of the Caribbean Islands, and finally, Benin. I enjoy all that the world has to offer.
