A simple, yet comfortable small shaker cabin placed in the middle of the Massanutten Mountain with views to die for of the Shenandoah River and National Park. Wake up to the sight of the magnificent "Blue Ridge Mountains" and the town of Luray, VA from 1,500 feet.

We debated long and hard whether to list this place on airbnb. After all, this is our hideaway, with a view that regretfully only a few will ever get to enjoy. But because we love it so much, and in the spirit of the sharing economy, we felt compelled to open its doors to others and allow you to experience the wonderful warmth that this small and rustic cabin will bring to your soul, your heart and your sight. While here, every sense is lifted, every smell improved, every sound a symphony.

If you're looking for modern comfort and the latest gadgets, this is not your place. Instead, if you want to warm yourself up, you'll need to place wood in the stove. If you want to check the latest stock prices, you'll need to call your broker because Internet is NOT available. If you want to watch TV in your room, please look elsewhere.

However, if you prefer to wake up to the most extraordinary sunrise in your life, simply sleep on the futon couch and open up your eyes in the early morning. If you find delight while hearing the buzz of a hummingbird, just place a few seeds in the balcony. If you want to reconnect with your inner self, seat in one of the shaker rocking chairs, pull up your legs and open that book you always wanted to complete. If you're lucky, you may even see a black bear or two roaming around (no worries, they are not dangerous).

The Cabin is located at about 1,500 feet overlooking the Shenandoah River, the town of Luray, and the "Blue Ridge Mountains." The view is a feast to the eyesight. But don't stop there. Visit the Luray Caverns, 6 minutes at the bottom of the hills. Hike to your heart's content on the Massanutten (Stephen) Trail a mile above or in one of the dozens other nearby paths. Bring a road bike and challenge yourself to the top of the mountain. Go horse back riding. Explore the Virginia wine country. Or just...relax.

Welcome to a place where time has finally slowed down!

Our guests will have complete access to the Cabin. You're welcome to use the newly renovated, small but complete kitchen. Help yourself to all silverware, plates and cooking utensils. Sleep in one of the two bedrooms or the futons in the living room, where you can see the view. Appreciate the also newly renovated small bathroom using reclaimed wood and creative rustic design. In short, this is your place, please treat it with comparable love and care.

Q & A:

Q: Why do you rent this place?
A: We use it one month per year at most. Why keep this jewel to ourselves? Please enjoy it as if it's your place as well.

Q: Why is there no Internet?
A: I work in the high-tech sector. I am connected 24/7. I wanted a place where time stands still, be close to nature, and could truly get away from it all. We want to share not only the place, but the experience as well.

Q: What if I need something from you?
A: Just send me a text message or give me a ring. You'll get my number after your booking is confirmed.

Q: The fridge is very small, will we starve to death?
A: Hey, no drama here. Yes, the fridge is small, but there is also an ice cooler you may use. Simply bring your own ice and please drain it before leaving. That should keep you alive for a bit longer :-)

Q: Should I bring sheets and towels?
A: No worries. We will provide bedding and towels, blankets, soap, shampoo and toilet paper. If you need anything else, please let me know and I will do anything in my power to have it ready before your arrival.

Q: I love this place, can I extend my stay?
A: If available, sure, knock yourself out. Simply get to an internet cafe or use your smart phone and book again. But please contact me beforehand out of courtesy.

Q: Great decoration, what style is it?
A: Shaker style. From wikipedia, "Shaker furniture is a distinctive style of furniture developed by the United Society of Believers in Christ's Second Appearing, commonly known as Shakers, a religious sect that had guiding principles of simplicity, utility and honesty. Their beliefs were reflected in the well-made furniture of minimalist designs." We are not shakers, but we are guided by the same principles.

Q. What's the sleeping situation?
A. Well, you're welcome to sleep any way you'd like :-) But to be more specific, there are two bedrooms, both with full-size beds. One bedroom has a platform bed with a memory foam mattress, and the other one a Murphy bed with a memory foam topper. There is a third full-size futon located next to the stove in the living room. If you're not into futons, there is also a comfy inflatable full-size bed found in the closet where the Murphy bed is. Please take your pick.

Q. There are no bathroom faucets!
A. Mmm, that wasn't a question, but yes they're there. These faucets and vanity were a DIY project of my own design using copper piping and shut-off valves and reclaimed wood. Just turn the valves one quarter of the way counterclockwise to open the water supply. Pretty cool, hugh?

Q. Is the Cabin self-sustainable?
A. Not yet, but I'm working on it. With your booking contribution, I created a system to capture rain water to the cistern below (the mountain is dry and water is a precious commodity here), and eventually I will install solar panels on the roof. Currently, all waste water goes into a septic tank, so as soon as I implement the above steps, the Cabin will technically be able to be off-grid.

Q. What other environmental measures have you implemented?
A. In addition to capturing water from rain and eventually energy from the sun, I have renovated the bathroom and kitchen using reclaimed wood, some of it from a nearby old farm. The dish and body soaps and most house-cleaning products are environmentally-friendly to help natural decomposition of waste water in the septic system. The floor is made up of natural cork and wood, and the entire place was recently re-insulated to improve energy efficiency. If you'd like to know more about our eco-efforts, please contact me.

Q. Why are there so many water jugs in the kitchen?
A. Drinking water in colorful jugs, as well as the 5-gal dispenser just outside the kitchen, comes from a nearby natural water spring (best tasting water I ever had). I leave plenty of it for you because TAP water is NOT potable. In fact, I ask my guests to be mindful of tap water usage because there is no well or city-piped water source. Instead, water is collected to a cistern below from rain or trucked in (by me) if need be. It is therefore a precious commodity. Simply shut off faucets when not in use, be careful not to leave the toilet running, and take shorter showers if possible. That's it! :-)

Q. How is the house heated?
A. The main source of heat is the wood stove. You'll be surprise how efficient this rustic appliance is. Depending on the temp, it may take a couple of hours to bring the thermometer up to your standard, so exercise a little patience. There is a heat-infused fan and a tea pot on top of the stove. The fan will propagate the heat efficiently and the tea pot (with water) will act as a natural humidifier, making you more comfortable. In addition, there is a wall heater in the kitchen (dial) and another one in the bathroom (switch) that you can control. Finally, a baseboard heater in the entrance hallway will keep the bedrooms (and water pipes) warm. In short, you'll be cozy!

Q. OK, so I will be warm in winter. What about the height of the summer heat?
A. Oh, you'll will be warm in summer alright :-) But seriously, there is an old and fairly inefficient AC wall unit in the dining room. There is also a ceiling fan in the living room and another one in one of the bedrooms. I've found that opening the windows creates a nice airflow that cools the place down. But if you're looking for a in-house refrigerator, this small cabin may not be for you.

Q. What's the deal with you being a Superhost?
A. Well then, since you ask...I'm a Superhost because we're relaxed about our guests despite us having full-time jobs of our own. However, I've come to be rather fond of that "title," and I don't appreciate when a guest leaves a review saying that the place was too isolated, or that the place was not what they expected (there's only about 40 pictures). If a guest does not read the detailed description where I specify the exact distance to places, or the meticulous portrayal of the house, or whatever, then their reviews should be kinder. I truly enjoy 5-star reviews. If there's something you do not like while here, I beg you to let me know and I promise to do what I can to revert your perspective. Remember, communication is king.

By and large, we're pretty easy going, but because this is our small hideaway, we'd like to preserve it for many years to come, and would like other fortunate guests to enjoy it as much as we do. Hence, we must list a few rules:

1. Absolutely no smoking in the cabin. Further, we strongly discourage you from smoking outside. The forest can be a tinder box, specially during the dry season. Never, ever throw away cigarette butts outside.

2. Treat the place as if it is yours. This is not a hotel, it is a place we love and could have kept it to ourselves. Instead, we choose to share it with others like yourself. Please respect that.

3. Dogs are allowed, but make sure you clean after them, whereas inside or outside. We love dogs dearly, and we understand that they must go, but please bring bags and dispose of them appropriately.

4. Respect the neighbors by keeping your noise level down. Sound seems to travel farther out in the mountain.

5. Check-in and check-out times are flexible. Remember, this is not a hotel, you're dealing with regular folks, not a business. If you want to leave later, that's alright, just let me know. If you want to arrive very early, that's OK with us, but I just apologize beforehand if I cannot greet you at the door.

6. IMPORTANT! When departing, garbage bags must be enclosed and disposed of in town to prevent animals (such as bears) to be tempted to come in. If you are unable to dispose of them in town, please let me know and I will take care of them soon after you leave.

7. You will see a House Manual printed in a red binder on top of the fridge for your reference. Please read it. In addition, a few days before your arrival, I will text you a link to a detailed Cabin Guide will all the information you will need. If anything is unclear, just call/text me.

Må gå i trapper - There are 45 steps from the bottom of the driveway. This is a work out, and not suitable for everybody.
Fasilitetsbegrensninger - Tap water (non-potable) is a precious resource. We ask to please be mindful of tap water usage. There is plenty of drinking weater in jugs, though.

This cabin is rustic, but charming. The wood-burning stove kept the place warm all night, and the view through the large windows is stunning at any time of day. Morning coffee on the porch was lovely. We took advantage of the well-equipped kitchen, cooking dinner and enjoying it looking out at the twinkling lights in the valley. We also enjoyed hiking the Stephens/Kennedy Peak trail nearby. Thank you, Rodrigo!

Thank your so much for your kind words, Ann. Kennedy's Peak is a great hike, and I'm so glad you enjoyed the views. Yes, water pressure is low, as we need to pump water form the cistern below. I apologize for this, but I hope this was not a huge inconvenience. Please come back in the Spring :-)

I stayed in Rodrigo's cabin for 4 days with two friends. We loved it! It is in the middle of nature, very peaceful, very tranquil. The view of the sunrise and on the mountains/forest from the living room with long bay window is priceless! Absolutely breathtaking. Also squirrels and birds :) The cabin is warm, well heated. We used the wood stove :) The kitchen is well equipped. We hiked everyday in Shenandoah park and once in George Washington forest. Close enough to the cabin. Rodrigo was very reactive and willing to help/answer questions. I definitely highly recommend this cabin! Ahlem

We really enjoyed our stay at Rodrigo's place. The house was clean and had everything we needed. The views from the house are fabulous and we were even luckier to have lots of beautiful fall colors surrounding us. We loved all the shaker decor throughout the house and vintage kitchen gadgets. The kitchen is small but it has everything you could possibly need. We also really appreciated all of the drinking water available for us. The front porch was a great place to sit and hang out to enjoy the views. The house is located very close to the Kennedy Peak trailhead which was a lovely hike with great views. We would love to stay here again!

This is my second time staying at this property. This was the first time in cooler weather so we were able to burn a fire in the wood stove which I loved. You can't beat the (URL HIDDEN) favorite was first thing in the morning, the fog in the valley makes you feel like you're in heaven. This is a rustic cabin so you have to understand that going in. I definitely recommend hiking the Kennedy Peak Trail just down the road!!

Thank you for coming back, Maureen. The first few cold days of the year do bring into the place a few critters, sometimes overnight :-| I'm so glad you enjoyed it and I hope to meet you in person next time :-)

We took in so much while in beautiful VA, and this cabin, decorated in Shaker style, was a special part of that. We made some very cool memories at the top of those 45 steps...yes, that's right, 45 steps; but oh, it is worth it when you arrive at the top. As you enter the cabin, and turn the corner to your right...wow, the view will take your breath away. Waking up to the song of the birds and enjoying our coffee as we took in that view each morning was everything. When we returned each evening, we settled in to see the lights appear below. The drive up from the road is quite steep, so be advised, you will require a reliable vehicle to make the climb. We drove our Ford Fusion on the trip, so it was a challenge, but she made it up there every time. If we were to do it again, we would have driven an SUV. I will say the climb made for some funny memories. Rodrigo lives up to the title of SuperHost, as he was always available and quick to respond when we had a concern or a question. We will always cherish our Masanutten Mountain experience.

Oh my, Beth. You reminded me of the first time I walked into that cabin after claiming all 45 (yes, forty five) steps. It is truly magical, and thank you for putting it into such eloquent words. I'm glad you and your family consider this little cabin a special part of your adventure. Please come back any day in search of even more adventurers :-)

I'm originally from Mexico. I went to school on the West Coast (Stanford University) and then to post graduate school in Washington, DC and Milan Italy. I now live in DC and work in the high tech industry.

My wife works for an international environmental non-profit, and we have owned our current home since 2003. We are both ecologically conscious and easy-going.

We have two small dogs, a wonderful Cavalier King Charles and a tiny and playful Bichon Frisè who ARE members of the family.

In addition to being proud hosts (and I personally reply to each and every request), we also enjoy being airbnb guests whenever we travel. And we do all this because we enjoy meeting new and interesting folks. We therefore look forward to getting to know you as well.
