Wake up in your king-sized bed to one of the most amazing views in the world. Enjoy a swim “beneath” the volcanoes and hang out on the dock. Relax and enjoy the tranquility or get out and explore. Take a walk to one of the neighboring villages or explore the lake by boat. At the end of the day settle back with a glass of wine as you watch the sunset.

Stedet
The house, newly completed in July 2019, is an open-plan, modern-minimalist lakefront home. The polished concrete floors and cedar ceiling, together with the floor-to-ceiling windows that make up 80% of the outer walls of the house--supported on a steel structure--make the most of the magnificent views of the lake and all three volcanoes. This is the philosophy behind the design of the house--to keep its elements simple and minimal--a palate of glass, steel, wood, and concrete--in order to diminish the presence of the house and maximize the presence of nature so that you feel like you are living outside in the elements.

There are 3 main spaces in the glass house: the entry-foyer, the bedroom, and the open-plan kitchen-dining-and living area.

Entry-foyer: when you enter the house into the foyer, you immediately see Volcanoes Toliman and Atitlan in the floor-to-ceiling gallery window in front of you. A small bathroom (a dry eco-toilet + a hand sink) is found off of the foyer.

Bedroom: the bedroom features floor-to-ceiling windows, a king-size bed that is cantilevered (floating), and a glass-encased shower. You'll find LED strip lighting embedded into the bed frame and ceiling that emits a warm, romantic glow. For privacy, there are floor-to-ceiling dark blinds that you can lower and raise at your leisure. Also you access the glass-encased shower via the bedroom. It has solar-heated hot water, and the shower floor is made of teak.

Open-plan kitchen-dining-and living area: the kitchen features a gas stove and electric oven located on its own island with a polished concrete countertop, a double-basin sink, drawers of pots, pans, bowls, and other instruments for cooking, a pantry for storing food, as well as a large refrigerator and freezer. This kitchen offers lots of space and amenities, so you can do some serious cooking!

For dining, sit at the gorgeous teak table complemented by 6 teak chairs. Turn on the wooden-orb hanging lights to create a magical atmosphere.

The living area features 2 matching sofas, each 2 meters in length. And there's a large fireplace complete with plenty of firewood.

The Property
Make use of our private docks (we have 2) to swim, hang out, and sit in the lounge chairs to enjoy the weather. Take out the stand-up paddleboard and explore, or use the wifi coverage at the dock to relax and listen to music. The dock is also where you will take public or private boats to other villages around the lake, to explore or eat at restaurants.

The public footpath that connects our neighboring villages also runs through our property. If you are adventurous, you can walk to Jaibalito or Tzununá along one of the most scenic trails in this area of Lake Atitlan.

Location
We are located between the villages of Jaibalito and Tzununá, on one of the most remote and quiet shorelines of Lake Atitlan. The property is accessible via boat or the public footpath (there is no road access). It is a 5-minute boat ride to these two neighboring villages, or a 30-minute walk to Jaibalito, and a 60-minute walk to Tzununá.

During daylight hours, public boats pass our dock every 20 minutes (at least during Non-COVID time. COVID has changed things). These boats can be flagged down as they pass our dock and they stop at all the villages along the northern shore of Lake Atitlan. If traveling by public boat is not your style, private boats are available to take you anywhere on the lake. If needed, we are happy to help arrange your travel to our property via a private shuttle and/or a private boat (fares are additional). We will also provide you with information to organize your own private boat travel around the lake, if travel by public boat isn't your style.

Gjestetilgang
You can access the roof of the house, the dock, terraces/yard space, as well as outdoor footpaths.

Andre ting det er verdt å merke seg
Please Note #1: because we want to do our part to protect the lake from contamination, Casa de Cristal features a modern ecological dry toilet imported from Australia (see photo). Waste is stored in a chamber that will be removed and thoroughly cleaned before you arrive and after you leave. It will be like using a newly installed toilet. The toilet is connected directly to an extractor fan, located outside the house, to ensure that there is no odor.

Please Note #2: a floor-to-ceiling window at the back of the house (not facing the lake) was broken by a rock. It is currently patched over, and there are large cracks in it. Due to COVID restrictions related to bringing materials via boat, we've not yet been able to repair the window. The issue for guests is that it is not perfect and beautiful. The upside is that at least it is back-facing. Look at the photos to see what the patched-up window looks like.

Please Note #3: because we still live in the house (we're only making it available to guests on the weekends and other select dates in Nov and Dec), expect to find our personal items in some drawers, closets, and the fridge/freezer. Don't worry, our items will be arranged neatly and boxed/bagged if possible. We point this out simply so you won't be surprised to see our personal items in storage areas in the house.

Please Note #4: there's a casita located on the property that we also rent out on airbnb. Please be aware that there could be other airbnb guests (max 2) on the property should you choose to stay here. The shared spaces include the dock and the walkways. This includes the walkway that goes past the door to the house because that is the path to reach the upper gate to the property. Even still, the interaction is minimal.
