Local Environment
Long Island Sound is the Grand Canyon of American Sounds – 110 miles long, 21 miles at the widest point. Sheltered from the Atlantic Ocean, the Sound develops it’s own ecosystem along the coast and it is quite distinct from the open ocean seashores.

Spartina grasses in the salt marshes offer sanctuary to young and vulnerable seahorses, oysters and mollusks. These young species breed and grow, protected from the hungry scavengers of the open sea. Once they have survived the vulnerable stage of growth they can move to the open waters. Salt marshes are the heart and soul of the sound. Hawk’s Nest Beach has protected marshes and wetlands adjoining the property.

Black Hall Outfitters can help you explore the surrounding natural environment. The provide tours, kayak and paddle board rentals as well as fishing bait and tackle. Find out more about what they offer here.

Essex Steam Train
From the Essex Steam Train website: “Unlike many railroad museums and excursions, the Valley Railroad Company has been in existance in one form or the other since 1868. In some ways, the history of this little railroad is as exciting as a ride on the railroad today, and reflects the ups and downs of the American rail system from the early days of steam to the present. Enjoy!” Learn more about the Essex Steam Train here.

Mystic Seaport
From the Mystic Seaport website: “What is Mystic Seaport? Ask three people and chances are you’ll get three very different answers. To some, it’s a fun family destination offering hands-on activities and special events. To others, it’s a world-renowned maritime museum featuring exhibit halls and historical interpreters. And to still others, it’s an incredibly valuable education and research center. ” Visit the Mystic Seaport website.

From the Children’s Museum of Southeastern Connecticut website: “The mission of the Children’s Museum of Southeastern Connecticut is to encourage learning and spark imagination by engaging children and all families through creative and hands-on play in a safe and accessible community environment.” Learn more about the Children’s Museum of Southeastern Connecticut here.

Florence Griswold Museum
From the Florence Griswold Museum website: “To preserve the legacy of the artists who thrived here from 1899 to the 1930s, the Florence Griswold Association was incorporated in 1936 to establish a museum dedicated to the art colony. When the Association merged in 1955 with the Lyme Historical Society, the trustees recognized that the mission of this institution, now known publicly as the Florence Griswold Museum (FGM), must be grounded in both art and history.” Learn more about the Florence Griswold Museum here.

Hawks Nest Beach...A family resort since 1895!

Be as busy (or not!) as you like!
In addition to the many organized activities offered, families will also enjoy swimming, exploring the beach, crabbing, riding bikes, kayaking, paddle boarding, playing basketball, tennis, meeting new friends and creating lifelong memories.

Weekly Planned Activities for the Kids
Looking for something fun to do with your kids? There is never a shortage of family activities at Hawk’s Nest Beach. There are daily organized activities offered for children of all ages as well as their families. Activities include, but are not limited to family scavenger hunts, sand castle contest, tie dye, edible arts and crafts, talent shows and weekly bonfire followed by a family movie on the beach.

Biking & Walking
The area is the perfect spot to walk or bike. All of the historic beach communities are a short walk or ride. Bike your way through winding, level streets throughout all of Old Lyme's beach communties. Visit Miami Beach, Sound View (for ice cream, carousel, beach bar and music on the beach), Old Colony and Old Lyme Shores.

Tennis Courts
While packing for your stay at Hawk’s Nest, don’t forget to pack your sneakers and tennis racquets. Guests are invited and encouraged to use either of the two tennis courts that are centrally located on the property. The opportunities for fun are endless, from pickle ball games, to watching your little one learn to ride their bike for the first time, or even creating your very own unique activity. The tennis courts have, and will continue to provide, the backdrop for countless family memories.

Independence Day Parade and Activities
One of our favorite traditions at Hawk’s Nest is the annual Independence Day parade and activities. Every year on the 4th of July kids of all ages meet at Garvin’s Store to decorate their bikes, scooters, strollers and golf carts. We then march down to the West End and back. Following the parade is a plethora of fun activities on S-Street such as watermelon eating contest, water balloon toss, egg toss, greased pole and much more. Feeling hungry, not to worry, the Garvin Boys are always cooking up hot dogs, mixing up Lemonade and scooping Ice Cream for everyone's enjoyment. So much fun is had by all!

Friday Talent Show for kids!
Gather around Garvin’s Store every Friday afternoon for a long withstanding Hawk’s Nest Beach tradition, the weekly Talent Show. In this end of the week culmination activity, guests of all ages are encouraged to showcase their talents for their friends, family members and fellow beach goers. Not sure what to perform? Don’t worry, you have plenty of time while relaxing on the beach taking in the sun and surf to develop a routine. Grab your family or friends and start practicing. The more creative the better! The activity staff at Hawk’s Nest has seen it all, and loved every second of it. From song and dance, to magic shows, to comedy routines, every talent is appreciated. We look forward to the talent show every week, it truly is the highlight of the activity schedule!
