Casa Paoli is a simple Corsican home with granite walls and domed ceilings. It's full of authenticity and creative touches making it an unforgettable AirBnB, and your host Francesca is devoted to ensuring you love your stay. The village is tranquil, surrounded by good hikes and just minutes from lovely white sand beaches. Come and discover Corsica! The mild climate is perfect for much of the year: outside the hot summer months, there's delightful weather from April and well into November.

Casa Paoli has been named in memory of the Corsican independence hero, and after the Paoli family who lived and gave birth here for generations. When the present owners bought the house in 2001 they were conscious of the privilege of caring for a small piece of Corsican heritage, and changed as little as possible, so the house remains much as it was. But to reflect its contemporary role as a joyous holiday home, rooms have been repainted in cheerful or soothing colours. The house is small, but has a large bedroom with super king bed, an arched kitchen and domed living room, and a bathroom with bath and shower. The interior style favours authentic objects; one of the owners is a travel writer, and souvenirs collected on his travels -- and in Corsica -- decorate the house. There is an 'events board' with ideas for visits and restaurants. Francesca provides her own hand-made soap, too. Casa Paoli is not a neutral 'touristic' space; but if you want a few romantic days in a genuine home full of local heritage and individual touches, you may love Casa Paoli.

As a gateway into the life of the village, Francesca provides visitors who stay for over 4 nights with a 'welcome box' of her organic vegatables. We also provide a free bottle of chilled organic wine from nearby Patrimonio, and can recommend other excellent local wines, cured sausage and local cheeses (Corsican cheese and sausage are amazing).

Casa Paoli is modest, unique, freshly redecorated and reasonably priced. We want you to love Corsica, enjoy the foods we invite you to sample, shop locally, discover the friendliness of the local people and feel that you have a had a genuine encounter with an island that remains miraculously unspoilt -- and retains such an acute sense of itself.

Urtaca, Haute Corse, Frankrike

Casa Paoli is located in the Balagne, a region particularly rich in artisanal and musical traditions, with many concerts in summer. It is an ideal location from which to visit both Corsica's northern coast and the historic capital of Corte a little to the south. The village itself is on a no-through-road two kilometres above the route nationale, giving it peace, a low intensity of traffic, and deliciously clean air!

The Mediterranean Sea can be seen from the house and is reached by car in 12-14 minutes. The long (supervised in summer) Lozari (pronounced LO-zari) beach, with its wonderful large grains of sand, cafes and easy (free) parking, is roughly 20 minutes away. The town of Isola Rossa (Ile Rousse), constructed by Pascal Paoli himself, is a 25-minute drive away and has numerous restaurants, cafes, ice cream parlours and shops, a shallow town centre beach popular with young children (supervised in summer), plus a great little cinema (with an extra open-air screen in summer!). The historic citadel towns of Calvi and San Fiorenzu (St Florent), with a host of excellent restaurants and beaches, are respectively 45 and 50 minutes to the west and east, with the drive to the east being particularly magnificent. Our sister village of Lama has an outdoor public pool with beautiful views -- it's a short drive or an enjoyable hike of 50 minutes along a well-marked trail to the south -- and there are many other hiking trails with glorious views; the famous GR20, considered Europe's best long hiking trail, can be started from Belgodere, a few minutes away. (Always carry more water than you think you need when hiking in hot weather. Note, many Corsican streams dry up in summer. Do NOT leave marked trails.)

Heading inland, Corte, the heart of the Corsican national identity, is a 45-50 minute drive away.

For a further sense of the island's history, we urge you to visit the Morosaglia Pascal Paoli museum in the great man's birthplace, a beautiful drive of about 35 minutes to the south. Head towards Bastia, cross the bridge at Ponte Leccia then turn immediately right straight after the bridge, where you see a pharmacy. Morosaglia is another 20 mins into the hills. Be sure to visit the village cafe when you get there, and look out for wandering cows in the road en route!

Here are our suggestions (July 2019) of some local places to eat.

L'Alzelli - on the main road beneath Urtaca - restaurant/pizzaria with pool for use by customers.

Pietra Moneta - Palasca - Corsican food and a very nice place

Vava'u Chez Taté - Lozari - On the beach, good food, a bit expensive.

At the west end of Lozari beach a cafe does coffee, ice creams, burgers. OK if you need a quick respite from the heat!

Le Goùt d'Ailleurs - L'Ile Rousse - Moroccan take¬away. You need to call the day before and order. Delicious.

Le Bar a Fruit - L'ile Rousse - Burgers and smoothies, homemade bread and local meat. For a quick lunch.

Chez Paco - L'Ile Rousse - Paella & Spanish food.

A Piazzetta - Calvi - fish and Corsican food, a nice place

Le Casaluna - Ponte Leccia - Location just OK, but good food and honest prices, nice wine too.

La Pizz - Aregno - Best pizzeria in Balagne!

(AirBnB does not allow us to list the phone numbers of any of these establishments, but Francesca will be happy to provide them if you are interested.)
