The Turret House is located in the neighbourhood Portillo in the indigenous village San Sebastian Rio Hondo, a much more peaceful and authentic - and much less touristy! - place than San Jose Del Pacifico (20 minutes away).

This private house is at the edge of town, facing a beautiful forest. There is a concrete floor, wooden walls and ceiling, and a little turret that bathes the house in sunlight. There are two rooms - a kitchen (with gas cooker) and a living room / bedroom (with fireplace).

Stedet
The Turret House is a part of "Kopacabanas", a local communitary project that aims to create an ecologically, culturally and economically sustainable type of tourism. "Be a neighbour, not a tourist!" Kopacabanas rents out empty, renovated rooms, houses and farms of ordinary people from town - in this way locals directly benefit from tourism, and visitors can much more easily become integrated in the daily life of the village.

The family Velasquez Ruiz lives next door to the Turret House and they invite you with open arms! In this house a visitor can choose between privacy or to enter the life of the host family as much or as little as you wish. This property is also their farm - you can feed the goats, turkeys and chickens, harvest corn and learn how to make real tortillas from scratch, or Vicente can take you on walks through beautiful forest paths to show you their fields. Or just enjoy the full privacy of the house, as you please...

The Turret House has a double bed with a very comfortable mattress, and a single bed with a futon mattress. There is also room on the floor for two more people IF YOU BRING YOUR OWN TRAVEL MAT AND SLEEPING BAG. There are various blankets available for the beds. At this altitude (2500m) nights can get very cold, but the house warms up nicely with a fire.

The toilet and the wood-fired shower are shared with the host family. Toilet paper is included - towels and bed sheets are NOT.
There is a simple kitchen with a gas stove, pots and pans, plates and cutlery, and the basics for cooking (oil, salt, sugar) all included. Gas, firewood and electricity are included in the price for stays of up to one week, beyond that we ask for a small, fair contribution.

There is electricity in the house, and delicious spring water in a tap just outside the front door.

Andre ting det er verdt å merke seg
I also offer an excursion to a gorgeous series of 7 waterfalls near the village of San Mateo Rio Hondo. The day-trip (about 9am - 3pm) includes transport in my 4WD, a stop in San Mateo, an immersion in the incredibly energising spring waters of the falls, climbing up the rest of the falls (at your own risk), a visit to a secret and completely unknown historical site (I can't reveal any details on the internet), and a truly authentic pizza by Italian chef Alberto at Rancho Kolibri (except Saturdays). You can also choose to be dropped off at the perfect spot to enjoy a one-hour independent trek across the valley back to San Sebastian. This is a very unique opportunity - because of the sensitivity of the places we will visit (absolutely not suitable for mass tourism), I can't offer this as an official "Airbnb Experience", I will only take the people I choose on an informal basis whenever I have some spare time and energy. My fee depends on the amount of participants but is not lower than 1000 pesos (including gas, excluding pizza). Bring swim wear (nudity not acceptable in case locals happen to pass by) and water, and half-decent footwear if you choose to walk back.

San Sebastián Río Hondo, Oaxaca, Mexico

San Sebastian Rio Hondo is an indigenous village in transition between ancient culture and modern life. It is a very peaceful and family-friendly place. We treasure the great relations between locals and foreigners and wish it continues like this. There is almost no tourism here - almost everyone who is not originally from here lives here permanently.

In this traditional village you will find a thriving artisanal scene (wool, cotton, pottery, wood), an alternative Montessori school, a yoga centre with a temezcal, workshops for kids, small communities inside the bigger community of the village. There are regular musical jam sessions, yoga and meditation classes, womens' circles, a recording studio, dance classes, chess nights, the occasional medicine ceremony, many artists and conscious families.

The innocence which still exists in this village surrounded by oak and pine forests depends on the humility of those who come to visit. It is important to deeply respect the warm but conservative culture - obvious no-nos are chemical drugs and nudity. If you're only passing by on your way to the beach or if you just come to party, San Jose Del Pacifico might be a more suitable place for you.

You can find basic food in small shops around town without a problem but if you have special needs you might want to consider bringing items from Oaxaca, Miahuatlan or Pochutla.

There is a small restaurant very close to the Turret House which also offers free wifi if you eat there. The signal reaches more or less the house. There are also cybercafes around town. Sometimes, especially in the rainy season (May - September), the internet drops out from the whole village. There is no cell phone signal in the village except for a few spots where there is a direct line of sight to Miahuatlan (about 500m from the house).

There is no ATM in the Sierra Sur mountains, the closest ones are in Pochutla (coast) or in Miahuatlan (in the direction of Oaxaca). There is also nowhere to change dollars (go to Oaxaca for not too terrible rates).

I am Martin, the founder of the Kopacabanas project. I have lived in these mountains for four years and I am trying to create a stronger local economy in order to give people an alternative income to cutting trees, and to give young people an alternative to going to cities or to the US to find work.

I speak Spanish, English, Norwegian and a little bit of Portuguese and French. I am here to help. I receive every Kopacabanas visitor in MY OWN house (about 1km from the Turret House), which is easy to find - follow the signs to "Kopacabanas" from "el triangulo" (the entrance to town) for 250m uphill. I will bring you to the Turret House where I will introduce you to the house and the family, and I will help with translations and any problem whatsoever.

I might also be able to help with activities like yoga, meditation, massages, workshop, volunteering, guided walks, and more...
