We created our self contained & private apartment from spare rooms in the original 'Aorangi Orchard' homestead.
THE ROOMS & FACILITIES.
A generous patio leads to a classic French door entrance for the apartment only. The entrance is into the kitchenette [2X3m] which contains a large microwave, benchtop oven, fridge, hotplate, dishwasher, toaster, table & chairs etc. A small sitting room [3X3.6m] contains a comfortable sofa bed with inner sprung mattress and LED TV, radio, etc. Also there is a bathroom - toilet, hand basin, bath, shower over bath etc. and a main bedroom [3.6X4m] containing a comfortable queen sized also lamps, hallstand, heater, etc. All windows look out onto sweeping lawns and garden, where a round garden table with chairs and sun umbrella is located within easy reach of the kitchenette.
THE GARDENS & GROUNDS.
Guests will be able to explore our large park like gardens with croquet lawn, and half acre boutique vineyard. There is also a petanque pitch and large garden table available for your use.
We will happily provide information, directions & recommendations for the many attractions & features of this far west Auckland area. We do not supply cooked breakfasts but if requested breakfast foods can be provided - homemade or grown if possible.
KUMEU & HUAPAI TOWNSHIPS.
Although we are located on a country road the Huapai township is only 1.8km away and the Kumeu township is a further 0.5km.
A 3 to 4 minute drive or a 20 to 30 minute walk. The townships provide shops and services of most types and have about 10 cafes and restaurants. Huapai has a public library and an arts centre.
THE AREA'S REAL ATTRACTIONS.
However the attractions that make this area unique are mostly located outside of the townships. The Kumeu wine and vineyard area has six renowned NZ wineries and a number of smaller ones all from less than a km to 10 km [15 minutes] away. Some wineries have award winning restaurants attached and there are about eight facilities catering to country weddings and other events. One of Auckland's best boutique breweries is 6.7km away [10min] - 'Hallertau Brew Bar & Restaurant, a further 1min drive is 'The Riverhead' one of the best of the 'NZ Classic pub network'. Also in the area is the best Auckland mountain bike park, a tree tops climbing park, horse treks, 4 wheel drive treks, paint ball adventure parks, golf clubs and driving ranges.
Two of Auckland's iconic west coast beaches are little more than 20 minutes away [Bethells & Muriwai] each with wonderful wilderness areas and other special features & attractions. Muriwai also has a Gannet colony where you can have an up close view of the birds nesting.
To cap it all off, Auckland CBD is approximately 25 minutes down the motorway [out of rush hour] or you could catch a ferry or bus!!
For a day exploring downtown Auckland we recommend the ferry.
We prefer non smokers and preferably no pets especially as there is no fencing and Station Road is busy at school start & finish times. There is a primary school in Station Road.
We request that guests treat furniture and fittings with care and consideration for the next guests.
We request that noise levels be minimised after midnight.
Tonia & I have lived on this property for some time. Originally I was orcharding and later changed to hydroponic greenhouse production of roses. Tonia was the photographer for the University College of Education. We have recently retired.
We enjoy living in this part of Auckland with its variety of attractions and activities and yet it is less than 25 minutes drive to Auckland CBD. We will be happy to provide all the information we can about the area to our guests as well as directions & recommendations.
Tonia & I have a wide variety of interests; arts, books, films, travel, good food, ecology and of course the wine we produce from our vineyard and our garden.
Tonia is a fluent French speaker and a lot of our travel has been in France & other parts of Europe.
