This simple and modern space was once home to a wonderful painter. The floor-to-ceiling windows are dramatic and fill the space with gorgeous light, sky and trees. The studio shares its two-acre plot with a log cabin built in 1930. The studio is situated in the Riceville Valley of Asheville...10 minutes from downtown. On your way to the studio, you will pass stone cabins, and bucolic farmland that still graze cattle. It is a private and happy spot, with mature trees and plantings all around.
The Riceville Valley is a storied place...the first settlers and farmers arrived in what is now Buncombe county in the late 1700s. Many of the descendants of those adventurers still live in the area. In the case of our Little Sun Bird retreat, the great-grandfather of a neighbor built the cabin that shares "the land" with the studio. The space is very serene except for the rooster that cries in the afternoon oddly enough. You are minutes from Asheville, which boasts a culture of history, beautiful food and creativity--and minutes from Warren Wilson College, which sits amidst some of the most gorgeous hiking and biking trails in Western North Carolina--Shope Creek, Kitsuma, and Tsali, to name a few. The entrance to the Blue Ridge Parkway is a minute or two down the road. It really is the best of both worlds.
The studio is a perfect size for a couple and one other guest as the daybed/couch can be converted to a twin bed. We welcome a dog (up to two dogs), and will charge a cleaning fee of $50.00 total for the stay.

Please enjoy all the grounds of Sun Bird...have a snooze in the hammock amidst the trees... or a little sit under the trees on your deck or in the yard.

I live very close to downtown...and will engage with you as little or as much as you like. We've lived in Asheville 14 years and are happy to share our insights into this vibrant place. I am a ten-minute drive from studio.

When you turn onto the property, you do travel just a bit on a gravel road. Our neighbors are very quiet but will wave, and some of the kids will give you news on occasion...recently, there was a baby bear sighting that caused some expected and happy excitement. If you are traveling with a dog, please keep him/her on the property.
We welcome a dog but let's have a small conversation about size and temperament. If you are traveling with a dog/dogs, the cleaning fee is an extra $25.00. ($50 total cleaning fee). Please do not instant book if you hope to bring a pet without checking with me first. Please be careful of pups knocking into the screen or scratching the screen doors. And also--I almost hate to mention this-- every dog owner I've met is really good about this, but please do pick up after your pup in the yard.
I love to hike with my hound-mix, Lucky...and love playing "songs you love and why?" with my music-minded husband and son. I enjoy chopping vegetables and drinking wine while watching my husband cook. I really enjoy telling folks about the Riceville Valley which we have fallen head-over-heels in love with. My life's motto is "It could be worse." Positive and slightly cynical all at once!
