Margot’s cottage is a lovely and comfortable getaway that is quiet and secluded, yet within a short drive to everything the Portland-Freeport corridor has to offer. Perfect for anyone looking for peaceful surroundings, privacy, and spectacular Maine vistas over water, without compromising on amenities and comfort.
The cottage is set in a wooded area only a few meters from the shore, with nothing but a few trees between it and the water. We spent every morning in rocking chairs on the porch, taking in the 180-degree view of calm waters and bobbing boats moored between the island and the mainland. When the tide is in, the water view extends to the side of the house and can be enjoyed from the glass-enclosed breakfast room.
Everything about the house and its furnishing feels like a genuine family cottage, with comfortable pine furniture and plenty of space for 6 people on two floors. The cottage was clean and the hosts had a nice selection of wholesome treats waiting for us on arrival.
There is a small community landing/pontoon well off to the side and barely visible through the woods; it is used by a handful of local kayakers, fishermen and people accessing their boats moored offshore. Unless you walk down to it you hardly know it is there, but it is a nice place to lie down and enjoy the sea up close.
Portland, a gem of a human-size town, is about twenty minutes away. It’s got everything from a variety of very good restaurants, to micro-breweries, art galleries and waterfront activity. For a quick and simple meal out, Yarmouth is only a ten-minute drive and has the basics, from great pizza (Otto) to more upscale seafood (Royal River Grill).
Margot and her husband Bill, lovely people with regional roots, were extremely gracious and caring hosts who went to great lengths to make us feel comfortable and deal with any questions we had. We particularly appreciate their effort to arrange for an internet connection when we enquired about it, even though the original description was clear that there was none. This was typical of their responsiveness and hospitality, and we look forward to being their guests again.
