Archie's Place is a 100 year old family villa in the midst of farmland and native bush with impressive mountain views. Located just down the road from the little village of Whataroa and only 37km north of Franz Josef Glacier.

Archie's Place is rooted in local history and there are a number of photos and artefacts on display in our home which tell the story of our family for more than a century in South Westland. Why not check it out?

Stedet
This beautiful old villa was built in 1916 for newlyweds Old Archie and Eva McBride. It was passed down through Young Archie to his nephew/my husband Anthony in 1993 and extended to its present form.

The open plan kitchen/dining/living area feature modern fittings that complement the high wooden ceilings, mouldings and fireplace mantle pieces in the original part of the house.

The fully equipped kitchen, including stove top & oven, microwave, fridge freezer with a variety of cooking/serving equipment provides everything you need to self-cater during your stay. Complimentary coffee, tea, sugar with an assortment of condiments are also available. New carpet in the living areas and bedrooms, a heat pump in the lounge and electric blankets in the bedrooms will ensure a cosy stay.

Each bedroom has its own character and is named for a stage in our family history, featuring photos and artefacts retelling some of that history.
Rotokino Room with its rich hues, rimu furniture and ceilings is so peaceful that it's very easy to sleep in!
Okuru Room is a gloriously sunny room furnished with material from shed doors constructed by old Archie and repurposed by his grandson Anthony.
Okarito Room was the original parlour and is furnished with materials repurposed from old bedheads from Anthony’s childhood. History literally sings from its walls which are papered with local newspapers.

You will love the spacious lounge which opens onto a large veranda overlooking adjacent pasture and native bush as a wonderful gathering place to socialise.

Archie’s Place provides an oasis from the busy-ness of life and a peace filled opportunity to renew your spirit and strengthen your heart until your next visit.

Gjestetilgang
All areas of the house and fenced grounds EXCEPT:
*the old kitchen/bunkroom (padlocked & labelled PRIVATE)
*the loft in the Okarito Bedroom (ladder removed)
*the back sheds (labelled PRIVATE)

Andre ting det er verdt å merke seg
SELF CATERING: Archie's Place is self-catering, so make sure you come prepared with whatever you love to eat and drink.

Remember if you are travelling from the north, stock up in Hokitika and from the south, Franz Josef will be your last supermarket.

NB
Self-catering includes washing/drying your own dishes/utensils when you are finished:)

While you’re at the Supermarket
Don't forget insect repellent - the sand flies can be troublesome at times (they seem to just love new blood!)

CELLPHONE & WIFI: While there is good cellphone coverage at the house, there's NO WIFI access. HOTSPOTTING with your phone using your own data can be successful though a bit slow at times.

Whataroa, West Coast, New Zealand

Apart from the peace that comes from being in a country place and the magnificent scenery that South Westland has to offer, You will find plenty of activities in the surrounding area for those who want a bit of adventure.

Whataroa is a small rural township of 288 people and is predominantly a service centre for the thriving dairy farms which operate on the surrounding river flats. It is also the base for trips to view the famous Kotuku or White Heron Sanctuary. This is the only breeding area for these birds in New Zealand and tours are accessed by way of jet boat down the Waitangitaona River during the breeding season.

Another unique experience is offered by Alpine Faultline Tours Exposed
on their Geology meets Ecology Eco tours of discovery adventure to see where the Pacific and Australian continental plates meet.

The Whataroa River is one of the best one-day whitewater experiences in New Zealand Deep green water carves its way through three spectacular gorges, with canyons set amongst amazing river scenery.

As with most townships in Westland the nearby rivers and bush clad hills provide world-class fishing and hunting opportunities as well as outstanding scenery. Lake Wahapo and Lake Mapourika are close for fishing.

Whataroa and Okarito townships are within the Tai Poutini (Westland) National Park as well as being the northern gateway to the South West NZ World Heritage Area which includes native bush, glaciers, spectacular lakes, rivers and Fiordland.

Activities for those wanting to get out and about include:
•nature or adventure tours to appreciate
native bush, rivers, wetlands
-birdlife (Kererū/Wood Pigeon, Kiwi, Komako/Bellbird, Kotuku/White Heron, Piwakawaka/Fantail, Tui)
-geology (mountains, glaciers, alpine fault line)
•scenic glacier helicopter flights
•hunting, fishing, whitebaiting
•bushwalks, cycling, tramping, climbing
•jet boating, jet skiing, kayaking, swimming
•golf, tennis, goldpanning

But if gentler pursuits are more your cup of tea, it's pretty hard to beat
•letting the local birdsong call you onto the veranda with a good book and the odd fantail for company -or-
•going for a quiet stroll down the road -or-
•cruising on out to Okarito for a massage -or-
•heading down to Franz for a coffee or a movie or maybe even a glass of wine -or-
•taking advantage of the lack of light pollution for a bit of star gazing in the deeply dark night sky

With so much to do, you will need more than a couple of days to manage even half.

I am a California girl who came to New Zealand as a young bride 45 years ago. I met my husband, Anthony, who was a kiwi sailor in Honolulu and we were married 5 weeks later! We have 5 children and 4 grandchildren so far. Anthony was born and raised in Whataroa and his grandfather helped build this house - so it's a taonga in our family entrusted to us. I recently retired to write poetry and look after this project. I love reading, writing and singing though my voice isn't so reliable these days - but I do it anyway! To create new things or repurpose old things is an absolute pleasure. I'd like to travel a bit especially once my 'boyfriend' retires too. My family is always at the centre of my heart and I look forward to enjoying more time with them in my wisdom years.
