Arguably the most informative tour of Inner and Outer Market

Although a part of Tsukiji has moved in October 2018, it still remains a very important place for both food professionals and foodies like yourself. In this 3+ hour experience, I’ll take you to the Tsukiji outer market and share my insight of Japanese history, food, and cooking with you. My experience is longer than other similar tours so that I can spare more time explaining the background stories and taking questions from you. You get to walk through the stalls and try anything of interest, seeing the actual market and checking out some of the local shops. I'm not tied to any shops and only give you my recommendations . You can stop, buy and try as little or frequent as your wallet/stomach allows it :). By the end of the tour, you will know the answer to these questions. 1) Where do the professionals buy stuff? 2) Is it true that the world's best kitchen knife shop is also the tiniest? 3) Have I tasted real wasabi before? 4) How much does my extra fatty tuna sushi cost? Interested? See you at the tour, then!

As a national certified English speaking guide, I have brought more than 1000 people to Tsukiji Market. I also shop there myself quite often and I’ve learned much about Japanese food and cooking in the process. I have seen many tourists wandering around, thinking it is just about fish and sushi. My aim is to share my knowledge and experience with you so that you can understand that Tsukiji is about much more than that.

Her skal du være

The Tsukiji outer market is full of shops selling ingredients, kitchen utensils, knives, and is well known for its restaurants with some interesting billboards. You’ll see the Namiyoke Shrine, too which also is important part of Tsukiji.

Had a great time on this walking tour with Ken! We were able to see places and things we definitely would have missed if we were to do Tsukiji on our own. Ken was friendly and answered any and all questions I had about the area, food and Japan in general - would recommend!

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our tour with Ken. It was really fun to hear the deep background and history on the market, the vendors, the move and construction of new Tsukiji, the tuna auction, and economics of fishing. Ken is a witty and warm guide with impeccable English. We sampled from each stall Ken suggested and we were not disappointed—in the end he even led us to his pick for an excellent sashimi lunch and it was phenomenal. Overall I would recommend this tour for anyone looking to learn about the market, rely on local foodie knowledge for recommendations, and a morning spent in the company of a smart, funny guide.

Ken’s tour of the Tsukiji market was excellent. His recommendations were unparalleled and we left the tour feeling completely satisfied having tried the best of what Tsukiji has to offer! The tour itself was steeped in history and culture, going above and beyond a regular ‘foodie’ tour. Ken himself was exceedingly polite and his anecdotes were hilarious. He even gave us further recommendation for finding crockery (which was amazing)! All in all, ‘The Other Tsukiji Tour’ was an amazing and thoughtful experience which we cannot recommend more!

This should be your first experience of Japan. Informative, immersive and engaging. Ken sets the scene for the Tsukiji market based on a deep knowledge of it’s past history and current use. The tasting options were perfect and time allowed for additional purchases. Ken’s professionalism as a guide came through as he navigated our group of 7 through the market on it’s busiest day of the year while still delivering his tour.

Ken was fantastic, his journalistic training really shows through in the depth of research and communication. I really appreciated his thoughts and the efforts he went to to ensure his tour is not biased - he's tried all the recommended foods paid for by himself and doesn't accept 'freebies' from stallholders to bring you to their store. The market was extra crowded for New Year and the queues were extra long but the great part is that it was a totally unique experience that you can only have at New Year and feels like a true local experience.
