I was born and raised in Regla, one of the most religious areas in Cuba. I come from a very religious family, and for that reason I am very close to experts and practitioners of Afro-Cuban religion. I also work in a museum dedicated to Afro-Cuban religion. I speak English fluently and have a degree in economics from the University of Havana.

Armando is a cool guy and was pretty knowledgeable about the different Afro-Cuban religions. The most interesting part for me was when we went to one of his friend's house, who's a Babalawo, and he explained in-depth each of the different Orishas, the Ifa, and more. The main setback for me was that Armando is not a part of / practitioner of any of the Afro-Cuban religions. He's done a very good job of researching them and structuring the tour, but I felt it would have been more personable if I had gone with someone who was a part of it (such as his Babalawo friend). He speaks great English though, is very friendly, and presented all the information very well. We had some scheduling and weather issues that affected the described program, but I think it was a one-off situation and he handled it well, coming up with new plans on the fly so that I could still have an enjoyable experience. I recommend visiting Regla and learning more about Afro-Cuban religions.

The tour was very remarkable and one-of-a-kind. I HIGHLY recommend taking the tour, especially with Armando. We were a bit late and Armando (our guide) didn’t mind waiting for us at the ferry that took us across the river and landed us in the city of Regla. For me, the tour meant so much because of my own cultural background. I am Nigerian and closely tied to traditional Nigerian spirituality. Armando was very knowledgeable about the history and practices. He served as an excellent tour guide as we visited the Temple of Yemaya/Church of Our Lady of Regla and an African Museum that housed a good bit of African art, religion, and history. Each exhibit was authentic as I saw bits and pieces of my childhood displayed beautifully for others to appreciate. Many times throughout the tour I was left speechless, including the meeting with the babalawo. Armando himself was a great host, offering us freshly made Cuban coffee, ice-cold water, and refreshing juices along the way; it was needed since the weather was incredibly hot. The rum was also amazing! Armando took us back to our apartment at the end of the tour, a very generous gesture. All in all, the tour was more than anticipated and the location is a nice getaway from the hustle of Habana.

This was an interesting experience. Armando walked us around quite a bit, so we saw more than a few places. The highlight was definitely meeting the santeria family. That made the whole thing worth it.

Armando is a WONDERFUL guide. He is extremely accommodating and will happily tailor the visit to meet your particular interests. Unfortunately, when I visited the museum was closed (because it was a holiday) but Armando still managed to have the museum director give me a tour. That was truly exceptional. And Armando's father was an unexpected source of information. Many many thanks to you Armando, your dad and the museum director!
