Experience a slice of what makes Brooklyn the hottest destination in NY: its rich culture, the many layers of which abound in the BAM Cultural District, a cultural hub nestled between Fort Greene, Downtown Brooklyn and Park Slope. Meet at La Caye, across from BAM, for a walking cultural presentation of the cultural district exploring such hallmarks as the Brooklyn Academy of Music and Spike Lee's 40 Acres & a Mule. (Other hallmarks here include the Shakespeare Theater, the Mark Morris Dance Academy and the Brooklyn Music School as well as historical must sees such as Lafayette Presbyterian, a stop in the Underground Railroad. We will do our best to include as many of these as possible, weather permitting.) Then indulge in some Haitian cuisine and Vodou Jazz music at La Caye while learning about the Haitian presence in Fort Greene dating back to the 1940s, as well as fun facts on Haitian food and culture. End the evening with some reggae dancing at 33 Lafayette to some live vintage Roots Rock Reggae, biting into the Jamaican layer of this scrumptious "Kulcha" cake.
I am a Brooklyn raised entrepreneur with over 15 years in the hospitality business and owner of La Caye Restaurant and 33 Lafayette Bar and Lounge. Both are located in the heart of the BAM Cultural District. As a Haitian-American, I was raised with the tastes and sounds of Haiti in the home and grew up steeped in the rich cultural mosaic that is Brooklyn. My restaurant has been serving up Haitian cuisine and live rootsy musical acts for 5 years. I wanted a restaurant in the BAM Cultural District to add the rich Caribbean immigrant experience to this hub.
