We, Jerome and Ishmael, are Capetonians who have experienced poverty and homelessness on the streets of Cape Town for 20 years. We work at the Streetscapes Urban Gardens and are part of the Streetscape social enterprise which is allowing us to reconnect with society.

Our colleague, Jesse, is the account holder and primary communicator for this experience. But we will be your tour guides.

Please note that we are currently in training, so have discounted the rate.

Although we didn't meet Magadien, everyone else associated with the project was beyond lovely. It is an incredible opportunity to learn about challenges with Cape Town's homeless and the system... as well as this solution that has started just a few years ago and seems to have a lot of potential.

The project is very intrressting. I learned a lot in a very short and special time. The guide is very competent and has a huge knowhow to share. If you wish to have a conversation with locals who really are able to tell you something about the infrastructure and how it is to live in Cape Town, then that is the best place to do that. The place is absolutely inspiring, motivational and save.

StreetScape opened my eyes to a part of Cape Town I had no idea existed. Living in the city, in any city we see what we think is the reality of homelessness. The thing is we do not have the slightest idea what it may be like living in the shoes of these people. All people everywhere, regardless of gender, race, nationality, or faith have a story. And it is that story which justifies us as worthy and of rights. However the mask of homelessness seems to strip people of these inalienable rights, and it is only through story and narrative that we can begin to understand their stories and experiences. Within these stories, the ones you will hear in Trafalgar High School's backyard farm, will spread light on the running narrative that is structural violence. The StreetScape farm provides a platform where homeless people can find a footing on life. Magadien’s story and the stories of the “beneficiaries” you will meet of which there are 200+ involved, will show the other side of the metaphorical coin that is homelessness. This experience was a refreshing change from the wrung out township tours riddled with unethics. StreetScape provides these ‘street warriors’ with a space where hope is given through the growth of life, and in turn lives are remade. Getting my hands dirty and being taught how to harvest veggies by Francois, definitely gave me a new perspective on homeless and inspired me to reconsider my ethics and morals considering homelessness. So if you are interested in taking part in an eye opening programme where you can help farm organic vegetables in Cape Town city, and learn how StreetScape is helping these people rebuild their lives I highly suggest you take a chance on Magadiens story. Plus you get to take home a bunch of your own harvested veg. -Dillon Joubert.

This is an experience not to miss while your in Cape Town! Trafalgar High School is just a short Uber ride from the City Centre. You will learn about the Capetonian life that is a hars reality for so many. And about what change it can bring for homeless people to get a job. You will see, smell and taste the garden. We had a nice picnic, with salad and sandwich. We could even harvest spinach to take home with us. The story of Magadien himself is an amazing story. Thank you so much Magadien - and all your colleagues - for this very special experience. I was touched by your stories and the positive vibe that you shared with us. I wish you all good luck and many visitors to your beautiful garden project. And by the way, the spinach was delicious :)
